Love this shot (particularly as I was enjoying the experience from the train at the time!)
It is only when you see it put up against a fairlie and original FR stock that you realise just how big that loco is (Although I realise it was originally built for 2'6").

Were the two damaged carriages unfit for service and had to be taken out of service I wonder? Presumably the timber in he photo is from the carriages?

And this is how the same locomotive, Trangkil No 4, looked on 11th August 2002, heading out into the fields in the late afternoon to collect a train of loaded sugar cane wagons, Pati, Central Java....

I've got the first batch of pictures from the Hunslet 125 weekend on Flickr; these are from the Friday and if anyone would like to see them, this is the first one in the Photostream:

[IMG]RD16949. LYD, IRISH MAIL and MAID MARIAN. by Ron Fisher, on Flickr

Alternatively, they can also be found in this album:

Hope they're of interest. Pictures from the rest of the weekend will be added as time permits.

    Glum time folks ..... :(

It seems after missing the recent Hunslet anniversary bash, matters both mysterious and frustrating to many of us conspire to keep the only surviving original NWNG/WHR loco from coming out to play at the forthcoming SuperPower event.

Whatever underlies the inability of Russell to make it past the junction points at Pen-y-Mount, I sincerely hope those in positions to come to suitable arrangements are able resolve any outstanding problems which prevent this fine old loco returning to it's sometime stamping ground.

Anyone got odds on Gowrie being the next authentic NWNG design to put in an appearance at Dinas? :Bag:

It does seem stupid that WHHR and the FR can't figure out a solution to the issues which have been going on for years now. I suppose the gas main and this caution with the land registry must to the WHHR feel like the only leverage they have over the FR, though.

But - from what I can tell at a distance, and from the links posted above - the current issues all seem to be down to the WHHR management refusing to cooperate, despite invitations from the FfR. If that counts as "trying to use leverage", surely it is a cutting off your own nose to spite your face situation?

Having walked past the site last week, the smashed wood is indeed a gatepost (150mm square) and fencing. The car was still nearby having been tragged off the crossing by a tractor, which did even more damage. The gatepost left a bigger dent in the car than the front of the NGG16.

The RAIB have noted the accident and handed the investigation back to WH&FR. In view of police investigations into the driver and insurance claims, I'm not going to post any photos.

    Cheers, Neil

In relation to Russell and WHR/WHHR relations - from what I can gather the FR/WHR set removal of a caution the WHHR have on land around the gas main next to Pen-y-Mount station as a pre-condition to any use of WHHR locomotives on the WHR. The caution means Land Registry have to notify the WHHR if any party attempts to register ownership of this land. What I'm not clear on is why the WHHR have this caution in place, and what advantage it has for them other then leverage. Seems an inconsequential blockage to a potentially fruitful relationship for both railways, but I'm not sure if it holds greater value to the WHHR

Apparently the WHHR were offered the opportunity to run Russell-hauled trains onto the WHR from their station as part of Hunslet 125, profits equally shared between the two railways, but this was blocked by their board without consultation. I expect the WHHR AGM in a week or two will produce fireworks!

Yes this is not the first time I've heard that moves to run Russell on the WHR have been blocked by the WHHR board. It seems someone is still grinding that axe 21 years after the handle fell off.
