    Mentally floating the loco around the workshop !

    Heres another one . P2 ( as does Tornado) has roller bearings on its driving axles which are either the ' Cannon' type housing on standard axles or shorter housings for crank stub axles or where clearance of the motion over the axle is tight. Since it is obviously not an essential requirement what advantage does the Cannon type housing confer ? , one disadvantage being that it adds to the unsprung weight...

    Yes I see, for whilst some stays would also perform that function the box helps keep at least one side of the bearing 'clean'.

    I must go and see it when it is on its wheels. The bulk is never quite captured in photographs so much as it is in the flesh.

    Just think, there's a grand's worth of frame I paid for those wheels will be sitting under. :) Just astonishing to think the dream is becoming a reality all over again.

    I still cannot believe that people would spend good money on building a locomotive, the original of which only operated in its as-built guise for a very short time before ending up as a rather ungainly "pacific." However, I'm very glad and very grateful that those people have spent their money and are continuing to do so! I will go and see it for myself hopefully in the next month or so.

    Tornado was the test run this one is the real business. I think it's the fact that the class was vandalised and not allowed to develop its potential that makes the project so attractive. It's why I spent my money and still do. If you haven't got a grand for one of the clubs become a Covenanter, it's only a tenner a month or more if you can afford it

    The original P2 design had some issues. The issues with smoke lifting (or not) and with the valves were immediately dealt with in the second one, in ways that were effective but perhaps not ideal. Further (real and/or perceived) issues were dealt with in the rebuilding, again perhaps not in an ideal way. Simon has a valid point about their value as prototypes for new building, but what was lost was what might have been, still a P2 with all the virtues but with the faults eliminated. Those of us who don't die off in the next few years will at last have a chance to see and ride behind one.

    The speed with which the P2 is coming together is consistently astounding.

    I'm quite excited at the idea of seeing the A1 and P2 in their base when it's complete.

    When you look at the progress and how the A1 group go about funding it, whilst at the same time having to look after Tornado , its nothing short of fantastic, they certainly have it all worked out, and more importantly costed, has any other new build group had the same rate of progress ? I can think of several who have been going longer and are no where near to where the P2 is , they look to be on track for 2021 So its looking a case of not if, but when the new P2 hits the mainline network , I wonder if the trust are thinking of a P2/ A1 Double header, when that day comes:)
