This is something that was mooted years ago for the whole system - a uniform livery but with "operated by X" on them somewhere.

The LNER livery is still much to close to Virgin for my liking.

A missed opportunity, in my view to have been more daring.

    Can you imagine.
    Scotrail>Scottish Rail>Scottish Railways>Scotlands Railways> Scotlands Incorporated Railways>Railways Scotland etc etc.

LNWR has also been reintroduced I see.

So we almost back at the big four. GWR, Southern, LNER, just LMS missing.

Yet more news - Normally electricals and electronics doesn't really excite me that much, but this is damned interesting, especially the paragraph about recording equipment - An onboard dynamometer no less. I can't wait to see the recordings from this when they start filtering through!
    https://www.p2steam.com/2018/08/08/electrical-equipment-order-confirmed/

As ever, the pace at which this project is accelerating is astounding!

I’m sure the powers that be responsible for procurement at MOD will scarcely be able to take their eyes off a one-off bespoke purchase for a hobby loco. I understand they’re also modelling military training on their experience of Hogwarts at the Harry Potter experience in Watford… it’s magic!

Is there a dynamometer on Tornado and if affirmative, has results from the plus 100 mph run been published?

I don't know, as I'm not a member, but I don't think a dynamometer is fitted to Tornado.

Among all that other stuff, some of it high-tech, including a dynamometer is probably a fairly minor addition. You already have a speedometer, so all you need to add is something such as a strain gauge to measure the force on the drawbar and some electronics to digitise speed and force, do a bit of simple number-crunching, and output a log of horsepower and distance travelled. That is not to say for a moment that any of it is trivial. The whole lot is most impressive.

That's pretty much it, really. Add drawbar transducer, get dynamometer.

When I was young, steam locomotives hauled trains with some kind of screw tackle that also compressed two side buffers.
The traction value is hidden somewhere between the stretch of tackle and compression of puffers.
Having three tranducers and subtracting puffer signals from chain stretch involves three sensor zero points and is not conductive to accuracy.

I'd agree except that I would imagine that the P2 will have a buckeye, so the buffers won't actually be in use and provide no input.

I doubt that D.B.H.P. and Drawbar T.E. will be of all that much interest to the driver on the road, though.

I find the main advantage of knowing the power output of a locomotive is so that when some t*sser in a pimped-up Toyota Celica with no silencer guns past me on the A27 outside Portsmouth on the way home, I can silently muse “ah, but I had about a thousand horsepower more than that in my control today...”

    Mostly curiosity my part.
P2 has been marketed as most powerful locomotive UK.
Starting tractive effort 10% higher than 9F.
Boiler more or less the same as Tornado and four driving axles running ca10% faster than three gives more mechanical friction I think.
Comparing Tornado,P2 with the old repports from Std7 going over S&C would be utterly without importance and maddingly interesting

Made presumably on the basis of Nominal Tractive Effort, and I'm sure that you know as well as I do that Nominal T.E. and Power output are far from the same thing.

Indeed. Perhaps the Trust's argument is based on the boiler producing much about the same amount of steam as any British pacific's boiler, plus valves that possibly make slightly better use of the steam (though unlikely to be any better than 71000 in that respect), plus more driving wheels for transmitting the power without slipping. Then again perhaps they are just basing it on TE as the Great Western did.
