It's clearly stated on the back of the emailed Jacobite ticket, that in the event of fire risk, diesel substitution is possible.

Having travelled on Monday's steam/diesel train a majority of the other passengers were unaware that the diesel was working hard.
The viaduct and Neptunes staircase thrilled them as much as the steam loco, I didn't hear a single negative comment in coach A

Personally I think the Jacobite would sell out even if it were diesel hauled as a matter of course, simply because of the route. The steam locomotive is very much the cherry on top.

I don't think it would at current fares, why would you pay twice as much as the normal fare to travel behind a box?

I think the route plus the superior WC service to Scotrail is well able to attract custom in sufficient numbers, irrespective of traction. It's only a personal hunch though, hopefully never validated!

Not as I know of but I did see the irony in @Johnb response
I have no objection to diesel traction per se, only if it is subbed or added to trains in an unsatisfactory manner. Obviously the Jacobite T&C make provision for the present position.
My point about the Jacobite, hopefully never borne out, is that the route is a sufficient draw especially with the heritage stock to attract custom even without the lure of steam.

A 37 to Mallaig sounds as good as a Black Five to Mallaig and is right traction for the route.

Has the rumoured steam ban effected The Jacobite?

As was posted earlier by JS, the Jacobite has the decisions made locally and I believe he said, on a day to day basis.

Thanks. Just wondered how a national ban would impact but understand how Jacobite can be treated differently.

Don't know whether this is general knowledge and I've missed it, but I've just seen on UK Steam that all of the pre-Christmas Festive Jacobites are cancelled. The three post-Christmas ones are still listed, but I can't see them making all the effort to get locos and stock up there just for three trains.

Railway Herald reported a couple if weeks back that they wouldn't run this year, no explanation. The friends I have up there said last years were hugely popular so its a shame they can't be repeated. Guess PPM on the locos has to be fitted in too though.

The schedules for 2Y61 and 2Y62 now show operation dates "Until 26/10/2018" which matches the finishing date in the working timetable section GA10 and the WCRC publicity. I'm not certain, but I think they used to show 7/12/2018 as the finish date for the schedules on RTT.

    Cheers, Neil

True - I'd forgotten that. I guess if they are only doing post-Christmas trains it removes the burden of setting up a Santa operation, with all that entails, so perhaps they will leave a loco (and coaches?) up there just for three days post-Christmas.

True, but the same applied last year and it's only one loco we're talking about here.

Can't think why it would have shown 7/12/2018, as that date is in the middle of what should have been the second three day period of operation.
