I thought Royal Duchys always used to run to Exeter from Par without a top-up, but could be wrong

Like many on here, I'm not a big fan of diesel locos being involved in steam charters. However, on this occasion I was hoping to pop along to Par for a glimpse of one of JH's heritage diesels.

If there is any diesel involvement (no idea if there is or not) it would be from the WCRC fleet

There’s not normally any diesel involvement on the RDs.

That certainly was the case on the one occasion I have done the Royal Duchy - 70013 was the loco . There was only one water stop (Exeter) in each direction.

I do not think there is planned to be any diesel involvement (other than the Bristol-Taunton leg) so long as the load is kept to a sensible limit (9 coaches?). I imagine there will be a number of very disgruntled passengers if there is!

Apologies if I have set a hare running... In hindsight my wording should have been -
87 Miles Par to Exeter St D is a bit optimistic unless there is a DL on the rear to assist quite a lot.

My comment was looking at the normal range of steam locos and then at the mileage to be covered. Clan Line had two water stops on an equivalent working in June this year and hauled a light load of 8 or 9 coaches. I was putting facts together and coming up with a planners low risk view. So, my interpretation is probably wrong.

The only time I did turn out to photograph a Royal Duchy, the weather was foul and it was diesel hauled due to certification issues with 46100.

    Cheers, Neil

Been on most RDs and they usually top up at Plymouth. It's nigh on 88 miles from Exeter to Par with all the banks in the way.

Never been any diesel assisted RDs other than in fire risk scenarios as far as I can remember.

Having joined at Taunton I wasn’t on that bit - what was unusual?

Unfriendly reply. It was reported on South West Rail Gen when the 37 left Taunton heading to Plymouth.
