What are the things with white ends sticking out just above floor level? They look like door stops but aren't near doors.

I believe the SVR have settled on something suitably GWR for their new cafe at Bridgnorth, worry getting in touch with them I should think.

Simon came up with the original suggestion of using a blank drop case clock in the same style, and lettering it GWR. This is what we then did.

The problem with genuine ones is the huge cost, and risk of theft from a public place like a booking hall or a cafe. My thinking is to repeat what we did in the booking hall, or go for a local name like Kays. Either should cost in the range of £350 - £500.

Regular readers will recall the sensible solution adopted for the Broadway Booking Hall, in which I was delighted to offer some small assistance, was to find a suitable age-specific clock and make some cosmetic amendments. This avoids having a valuable original vulnerable to the light-fingered.

I see what you mean. I browsed the Kays site, and came across the reference to the giant clock (like the one at Paddington station) that is said to be in storage on the GWSR.

I must find out where it is and have a look. It's not going to Broadway though, it is far too big and the skin of the station building is only 1 brick thick. Where could it go though? You need a substantial wall to hold it up.

Jo, might I suggest that the radiators be painted the same colour as the wainscotting, or at least have them boxed in, so they don't stick out like sore thumbs?

I'll forward the suggestion, which is a good one. At the moment, out of the box, the 4 radiators are white.

Now why didn't I think of that?

Edit: I know why; because they're horizontal.

There’s a clue. It says above that it’s a solid concrete floor. It would be quite foolish to fit the CH pipes inaccessibly in such a floor...

So they must be wall-mounted behind the panelling.

They did that in my mother in law's 1970s bungalow. They started leaking but she didn't notice immediately. The water seeped out under the floor and into various walls. Repairing all that took months and months. So, yes, that was a foolish idea.

OK. I confess to being a dimwit (sometimes). Radiators had even been mentioned. Presumably those pipes won't stick out quite so far when they have been cut to length and had right-angle connectors fitted.

There are no foolish questions, only foolish answers.

One for Jo @Breva . I enjoyed opening day at Broadway immensely. I have promised myself a trip back before too long.

    (1) Any idea when the cafe is likely to open?

    (2) How long a walk is it between the stations in Cheltenham?

    Ooops, that’s 2 questions.

I think someone wrote a sketch about that...

    - The cafe will open for next season.
    - It's probably easier to take a taxi, as even the bus only takes you to the entrance of the race course, and then it's still a walk.

A VERY long one. As I recall the bus took something like 20-30 minutes.
(I now drive to Toddington when I visit)

I don’t mind a bit of a walk. I often walk from Ryde ferry to Hsvenstreet when visiting the IOW.
