The boiler is moving today to the new premises at Huyton. This image really shows how the finished boiler will look. Exciting times and if you can help at all please visit www.lms-patriot.org.uk to donate today.

Is the barrel a welded tube or traditionally constructed with butt straps? There appears to be a welded seam from the photo.

The two barrel sections are seam welded rather than the traditional lap riveting. This is one of a few changes from the original design. The rivets in the corners of the foundation ring being another.

I'm walking in to the fire here, but surely it must have been tempting to weld the whole barrel together, save a few pennies in the process.

Ah but is a fully welded boiler cheaper, I do know some years ago when getting a boiler built for one rather old loco the quote for the riveted boiler was slightly cheaper due to the lack of NDT testing required, although I'm not sure if that's an issue now?

Ah, but would you save pennies? Equate the extra design and paper work involved into man hours.

More excellent progress! I hope the crankpin keyway issue isn't a serious setback.
Otherwise, it's coming together very nicely.

I am puzzling over the images of the gentleman said to be working on the casing for the cylinder relief valves. The location looks more like the drains, the relief valves are more usually on the covers aren't they?

Are they meaning snifter/vacuum relief valves or cylinder drain valves,
    confusingly written.

No, the cylinder relief valves and drains are combined units on the unrebuilt Patriots. They are similar to what is on the Crabs.

Thanks, that explains the larger devices on the bottom of the cylinders. What do you think the hole and mounting flange is for on the cover in the attached pic? On the face of it, the relief valve bodies in the other pic could fit on it.

On the original Patriots the Cylinder Relief Valves are mounted below the Cylinders where the Drain Cocks are found on other (later) designs.
However, we have found an issue with the original data and drawings for the front of the Inside Cylinder. The original drawings show the cylinder arrangement with the Relief Valve, but no bogie, or the bogie without the Relief Valve shown on the Cylinder. When the cad data was assembled it showed up a clash between the bogie end stay and the Cylinder Relief Valve. Photos of the original locomotives do not show up the original details.
The solution we decided on was to fit a later pattern Cylinder Relief Valve on the Front Inner Cylinder Cover. This is the cover shown with the mounting pad.

    45551 boiler update!

Work has now started on fitting the tubeplate to barrel angle ring, this will enable the smokebox to meet the barrel for the very first time! Pictures from HBSS

    Chassis Update.

Nigel Day has kindly sent us these images showing the excellent work in progress that is being made installing the complex pipework runs that will keep ‘5551’ well oiled! The lubricators on both the left and right hand running plates are gradually having their individual copper pipes formed and connected before they extend to their intended destination. As ever, we need your continued support to keep up the good progress so please do visit our website https://www.lms-patriot.org.uk/ to find out how you can help.

    Thanks for your continued support.

Having read the article in Steam railway this comes as no surprise.
