They'll have to get it down here somehow. I'll go to extremes to get a ride down the ECML behind a mighty machine

 

Great to see Tornado is up and running again (almost). Let's hope things proceed smoothly.

It's a pity about the Auld Reekie though. It would have been only the second (and last) steam run this year up here on the ECML north of Newcastle through darkest Northumberland, after the one-way mission by 60103 back on 19th May. I was looking forward to that.

 

I would imagine all helping to offset the rather large hole in his pocket from the last 12/18 months with the various unexpected works No.9 has required, in light of the impending retirement of her he could have quite easily just decided to pack up then and save himself some cash, a decision for which he has not received that much credit on here when one considers the vitriol that was flying around on here towards said gentleman when the retirement was announced....

 

Wait, did I read this right, No.9 is deputising to Edinburgh?

 

Heard May 4 for Ynys Mon and March 3 for Auld Reekie may be the the revised dates.

 

VERY well said. I said much the same myself but got the feeling that to suggest that JC didn't have to do this but did, and that it was up to him what he did with his locomotives thereafter was tantamount to heresy on here.

 

No different to how some of us feel when we're shot down for saying say that we recognise and respect John Cameron's right to do as he wishes with No.9 but wish he'd take a different path.

 

We're almost in that position already. The only planned trip left for this year is the 1st December "Christmas Border Raider". I can understand why, for some people, the uncertainty of information about the repair and eventual return to traffic can seem to grate with the confident promotion of more and more tours next year. The marketing seems a bit out of step with the engineering.

 

Its a Rock and a hard place.... takes a while in advance to organise paths, crews, advertising etc so 'waiting until' is likely to result in yet another Month or so of inactivity.
Tornado only deputises for very few other operators so impromptu turns are few. Santa specials on Heritage lines tend to sell regardless of whats rostered so the big/ rail connected lines will use home fleet rather than guests for this. So its running in at NVR, mainline test run, hope for an odd Autumn Gala spot and the 1st December run... then Better luck for 2019...

 

Have the SRPS tours with Tornado on 13th October and 3rd November been cancelled? They are still showing on the SRPS Railtours website.

 

There is also a Pathfinder trip on the 15/12 to Chester.

 

In light steam at NVR today, work continuing on the R/H valve gear.

 

They were awaiting a part to be delivered with the aim of fitting it later today.

 

And may I add (being one of the few people to commit his words to print in the railway mags) the vast majority of us were respectful in our disagreement.

And I still disagree that retiring either engine is the right decision. But the die has been cast - let’s enjoy no.9 as best we can.

 

Running in resumed on the NVR tonight following repairs. Tornado will be pulling passenger trains for the first time in some months at the Nene Valley Railway’s Tornado 10 event tomorrow and Sunday. If you’ve been going cold turkey, come on over and join in the celebration.

 

She`s running again!!!

One more time her beautiful whistle will be heard along the railways in britain!
