Does anyone know if there are plans to put her through further testing (that can't be achieved on the current L&B), whilst away?

However simple the tests - just how many carriages the Lyn could manage versus Lyd - they would be valuable. If there can be reliable indications of efficiency - water or
coal consumption with the same train and the same timing - they would be welcome indeed.

The original Baldwin 2-4- 2 and the Manning Wardle 2- 6 -2s were surprisingly comparable in everything except adhesive weight which was 13 tons v 18 tons - 6 tons 10cwt v 6 tons axle load. The Manning Wardles were better able to keep their feet and had sophisticated slide valves - balanced and giving a better exhaust - but a lower pressure by 20 psi.

The new build 2-6-2 Lyd is surprisingly to the original design including the Richardson slide valves and the only major changes seem to be a superheater, which must have meant rearranging the tube bundle and increased sideplay to the wheels either end. The standard loads on the Lynton and Barnstable were 4 coaches over a ruling gradient of 1 in 50 and with some tweeking the new Lyd has hauled six over 1 in 40 0n the Welsh Highland - the climb up from the River Glasyn to the summit through Beddgelert is long, and as unrelenting as it is continuous. The new 2 - 4- 2 Lyn is a considerable redesign from the original and really - however much it has the outside envelope, remarkably looking like it did by 1930 - is not at all the same in the innards, either in the boiler the or steam circuit, in order to haul six carriages on 1 in 50.

The factor limiting haulage will be adhesion and really good reliable sanding will be most important. I would expect the new Lyn to be about as powerful as Lyd and it has
had the weight on the driving axles readjusted which has probably enabled an increase. Does anybody know what the detailed axle loads are now?

That is incorrect - Lyn has piston valves, she is also a 2-4-2T. There are also a multitude of other changes/improvements, so I don't think it's quite accurate to say she is 'surprisingly original', maybe 'surprisingly sympathetic to the original' would be more appropriate.

    See http://762club.com/762lynformation24.php

Maybe you meant 2-6-2T 'Lyd' on the FR/WHR?

I'm afraid that I find the names "Lyn" and "Lyd" all too easily confused.

My apologies for having quite confounded them about ten days ago.
I have edited what I posted earlier today and that should have the names right now.

    Is it Dinas?

(Maybe we should have a thread where people put photos up and say “where is this?” for others to guess. Could be a long running entertainment, though probably they’d have to be a bit harder than this ...)

As long as it doesn't end up here we should be fine. However, taking Edmund Blackadder's advise , maybe we should wear a bib if it does.

On the basis that most people got off it and send to the GM ‘can we send Lyd back and keep this one’....pretty well I think!

In other words, nothing which is going to help with evaluating the locomotive's performance potential, re tractive effort, fuel consumption etc.
Pity. It sounds like an opportunity wasted.
I had wondered why reports of the visit has been virtually non-existent. perhaps this explains it.

As far as I am aware, when you're wanting to test something you don't go and stick an entire set behind it, you build things up gradually. Are you forgetting that the run from Caernarfon to Waunfawr (single) is about the same as 3 1/2 Woody Bay return trips (and all up hill)? The locomotive did 122 miles in 3 days (ignoring the test runs) which is about a weeks worth of operating in the South-West. So towing around six carriages in total (if you include the engine at the back) seems like a pretty good starting point to me.....

If Taliesin was being hauled as a dead weight, then yes, I agree with you, it was quite a stern test for Lyn. I just figured that the trailing loco would at the very least be pulling its own weight, so to speak, and therefore not be of any account to the load. I guess if you were there, or part of it, then it would all make sense, otherwise, there's not a great deal to go on.

Very reasonable points. But worth considering that if the L&B achieve all their objectives, you're looking at a 19 mile run, mostly uphill. I wouldn't necessarily judge "good" by reference to the current line - or even Woody Bay - Wistlandpound.

Lyn pulled four full coaches last Saturday, starting on the level at Killington Lane and climbed the 1 in 50 all in her stride. Talking to one of the drivers she climbs the hill nicely.
