A few of my shots processed so far from a very sunny Friday and also this morning's charter with the J27. Many more shots than this to take off the memory card, but I think after a night of kipping in the car, I'm better off taking the evening off than looking at more steam!
A very enjoyable 26 hours none the less, and seemed busy again at both lineside and on train. So hopefully another success for the Moors.

I was on the footplate of the Schools . :)
The original plan was for 76079 to bring the last train in from Whitby and 34081 to go on the front as pilot loco to Pickering.
The gala organiser (926’s driver) decided otherwise and arranged an all Southern combination. Magic.

Had a cracking day firing 34081 on Friday - a very smartly turned out loco that did everything asked of it. And for once the timetable was robust enough with plenty of station dwell time to ensure that it worked well. On our first return from Pickering we approached Levisham with the up train already there and all the signals pulled off. Put a decent round on ready for a prompt departure only too find that we were not due to leave for another 13 minutes - doh! Even the signalman hadn't realised we were due to sit there so long. But a sensible timetable that allowed time for people to change trains and schedules to be kept.

Here are the two Southern stars at the start of the day:-

I spoke to the driver on Facebook this morning and he said the long whistles at Darnholme were for the scattering of a loved one's ashes.

Didn't do much filming as I was on holiday, but intended to film the final southbound train of the gala and what a great show from the unexpected Southern double act !

Correct. A BBLS volunteer lost his father, also a BBLS member, a year ago and he put his dad’s ashes on the fire at Darnholme.

Had a great time at the gala - the first NYMR gala I've been to since 2009 & it certainly didn't disappoint. 34081 was the star of the show for me (just magnificent, and love the livery) but 2857 put in some very good performances, as did the home fleet. Lovely to see lots of different liveries as well - 1264 (aka 1251) looking particularly good on the teaks.

Big thanks to all involved, and look forward to next year! Some photos below, remainder here and video to follow.

Lovely stuff Fella! For me the highlight of the Gala was the return of the J27 (which I had been waiting for so long). I rode behind her and the Q6 on the Saturday up the hill on the teaks and what a racket! Glorious stuff; that and renewing my acquaintance with the Beer Festival in the Goods Shed at Goathland, the general chat around the railway, the return of 926 an old favourite...… so many good things: thanks to one and all for arranging this.

I must, however, give my special vote of thanks for the Freight because when I first saw it on the Saturday am I think I had the world's first Freight-gasm! What a wonderful mixture of wagons but particularly the hoppers which are so typical of this part of the world. I said to the Guard at Grosmont on the Saturday that there was a nice mixture of vehicles but also of high and low vehicles so the "skyline" is up and down and up and down again.

All that and Cappleman's Chippy in Pickering: I've already booked my accommodation for next year. Any chance of bringing back the Spring Gala too?
