Having bought our tickets would be good to see loco allocations so we can plan our day.

Correct about both of those. I'm more interested in which way the visitors face. I hope someone knew before publishing the allocations otherwise we might end up with some silly back to back double headers.

Not the most spectacular gala lineup ever - no celebrity locos but some good honest workhorses that should make some noise over the alps!

Unless it is on the rear of the 1135. I wonder if some ( or all) of what intially appear to be double headers are actually top and tailing. Can anybody confirm ?

Most likely (from what had happened in the past) 41312 will come off the down train in the cutting outside the station move to the front of the up train and another loco (92212/76017?) will drag that set in. Normally these moves have a negative impact on the timetable...

I've always thought this a strange, if not slightly bizarre, practice and one that can have a definite negative impact on the timetable, especially if the train is running late. The time taken to uncouple, swap locos and re-couple usually results in more time being lost. As a passenger on services where this has been done the comments I often hear range from questions about what has gone wrong to cause the train to be stopped short of the station to suggestions that something has gone wrong with the loco and that's why it's being taken off the train.

Yes I know - it can be frustrating to be stuck on a train that's not on the move. Many times I have been stuck on a train in the loop at Alton while they take the loco off to put on the next train and another one appears to drag the train into the station. I know they are trying to mix things up a bit and keep it interesting but there never seems to be enough time allowed for these operations to take place (look at the problems with the Swanage timetable last weekend).

What surprises me is that if people like Gricerdon and myself can look at a timetable and think "that won't work", why can't the people at the railway who organise these things see it? Before anyone starts or asks me if I could do better I'm not having a go at anyone but I think everyone (passengers and staff) has a better day when things go to plan and the timetable doesn't slip.

Anyway, let's see what happens with this one - I'll be down at the Mid Hants on Saturday.

Ah, all fun... 13 minutes to turn a train round at Medstead could be interesting - I've never had to help do that before! I'm assuming the train would be going into the up platform and the loco (7822) would be running round through the down. I'm assuming there won't be any shunting of wagons from the set...

Could anyone from the MHR explain what the make up/consist of the Shuttle is please? I assume that otherwise it's the usual 5 (at least) coach sets?

    Thank you.

In some previous galas the shuttle has been a DMU being hauled by the steam. No idea what is planned this time however.

At recent Galas when the shuttle has operated it has usually been made up of two or three carriages with either a tanker or a van from the freight train.
The service key on the new timetable says this: Shuttle Passenger Service (Mixed Set including FT Vehicles)

925 has never faced towards Alton. If I had a choice of turning 925 to face towards Alton or having the loco repainted in to BR lined black or Green I would go for turning the loco round to face Alton.

5199 and 7822 will both face Alton, yet to be confirmed for 80078 but most likely facing Alresford
