I know, I went to see her and the others. However a cosmetic restoration only was done which, presumably didn't cause problems.

I would bet asbestos removal in Canada would be significantly cheaper than jumping through hoops, and removal in the UK.....

Why would you think that? Asbestos is seen as no less a danger to public health there than it is here. Things may be different in Trump's America but Canada is not part of the USA.

As regards Asbestos wasn't it all sealed up before it came over in 2012?

Was it not "loaned" and then "returned" - somewhat different from "sold" and "exported", I've no idea how Canada works its laws but if we loan a important piece of say art it would be relatively easy to loan a item to a overseas museum, if it's to be sold and then exported a whole other system comes out to play . . . . .

As for the Asbestos issue I had a quick google and their regs. are broadly similar to ours so I can't see there would be much different in cost except the average wage cost in Canada is much higher than ours (no surprise there then!).

It must have been Matt, to gain an import licence, how they did that I would not know.

The law is quite strict in this instance.

I think you are over-analysing @ragl 's post: I understood him to mean simply that it had entered and left the country a few years ago, with respect the discussion about asbestos. He wasn't implying any specific change of ownership.

As for removing asbestos in Canada: were that to be done, presumably it would have to come with some form of certificate that it was free from the stuff. I wonder what mechanisms are in place between the two countries for mutual recognition of standards in that area?

Ah, you're thinking of the so-called "Ghost ships" that were broken up in Able UK's facility on the Tees. Yes, they were asbestos contaminated, but it was disposed of properly under very controlled conditions.

Wouldn't matter - it was effectively imported and then exported, so would have had to adhere to all relevant laws as though it was being imported to stay.

I believe is states that in the Steam Railway article (which I don't have in front of me right now to check, but I have read it somewhere in last few days)

I don't have the SR piece to hand, but I am sure it was suggested that the asbestos was essentially sealed within the casing with expanding foam in order to make it acceptable previously?

Whatever mechanisms are currently in place (EU) unless the current government wakes up there will have to be new ones negotiated after next March (or is it the March after that!).

Exporting historical artifacts is very different to just a loan in many countries (for example I've seen the rules for Australia) it may not a unsurmountable problem but just because it's returned on loan does not overcome any such negotiations - as I stated earlier I've no Canadian knowledge so I can't comment on their rules. The fact something originally came from the UK is usually not enough too from stuff from "down under" if it's regarded as important to them.

Its all part of the process that will need to be gone through, but it may not be quite as simple as to "just flash the cash" and it's a done deal IMHO.

I mentioned that in an earlier post. How you sell 'a gift' from a friendly nation is a reasonable question.

Well, on eBay if the goodie bags at the royal wedding are a guide ;)

Being serious - surely the point of a gift is that it is, well, a gift. Unless there were explicit covenants in the terms of donation, the donor loses all right as to what the recipient does with it at the point it is given.

(That doesn't alter the fact that Canada may have its own internal rules about whether historic artefacts can be permanently exported abroad. But that is entirely a matter for Canada, not Britain).

'xactly so. And as it was going to be scrapped if the gift wasn't accepted I greatly doubt there were any conditions at all... It would be rather strange if there were.
