I think you might have missed a degree of subtlety there, as Copper-capped has pointed out.

I honestly have no idea  read it again, if it’s subtle it’s very subtle!

The problem with the internet, as always, is tone...

Which sounds, of course, exactly like C yet sometimes it is correct to write it as B#. Subtle indeed.

I'll stick with 440Hz. Easier on the ears than 1kHz.

I think the answer to this is "cool", or similar. All of us here admire Spitfires(*)but I wonder how many on the aeroplane forum would admit to liking steam locomotives.

There is also, for a potential investor, the "magnet" effect. Tell the chaps in the office that you spent this years bonus on a Spitfire(*) and you are instantly one of the few. Cool, brave and dashing, and Julia from marketing will throw her knickers at you. Tell them you spent it on a steam train and you'll be not cool, not dashing, and only Clive from Systems Development will offer you undergarments

I’m on some aircraft forums and in the general photography sections there’s quite a few people who post railway pictures, especially steam.

So on an instrument with digital tuning to the equal temperament system that is the same as b♭ - I'm not going to lie, I didn't know about temperaments and had to look it up, after a vague recollection of my piano teacher telling me that people with perfect pitch would hear c and b# differently.

440hz is the A above Middle C and the fourth A from the bottom of a standard 88 key piano. Therefore it’s A4.

C and B# are exactly the same pitch on a piano or on most fretted instruments. Looking at a piano you’ll see no ‘black note’ between B and C therefore B# can only be the same as C. Singers and players of non-fretted instruments (e.g. violins, brass, woodwind) have infinitely variable pitch and can therefore differentiate slightly between C and B# if they want but probably no-one else will notice.

The subject of tunings and temperaments is almost unbelievably complicated. The more you find about about it the more the brain hurts...

Does discussion of temperament of musical scales in a thread about a particular locomotive (and without mentioning its chime whistle) qualify for this year's extreme thread drift award?

    That was unintended...!

    I knew 440Hz was 'A' - but not specifically A4.

This is definitely a NatPres Thread drift I didn’t see coming ...

What frequencies does a chime whistle operate at?
