I didn't get to do any of them last year but I'm on the first this year, so will get a rare southbound over Shap. I see that there are various stops in loops, probably not all for pathing, but to give Santa's helpers chance to get through the whole train which I believe is just 1 dining, kitchen, buffet, 8 standard and the brake.

If it’s a WCML run both ways, somthing a little quicker than the 8F may be needed. IIRC, every train last year was assisted.

There are planned pointwork renewals at Horrocksford Jn ‘some point before Christmas’. Maybe has somthing to do with that? Although I understand it’s just a weekend possession.

I can't see them even thinking of using the 8 for Shap both ways, as you say there is work being done at Horrocksford Jn and since the Santas are Sundays, that's probably the reason for the change of route.

    Isn't the 8F limited to 50?

Yep, but even so, may still be the reason?

All steam charters are timed at 60 mph. It's to do with the software programme working out a sensible schedule.

Are you sure that is correct?

One example, the Swanage Belle, steam throughout 60009, timed to 75mph:
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U55434/2018/09/13/advanced

Another example. Farewell to Alan Pegler: 60103, timed to 75mph:
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U53479/2018/10/13/advanced

Tornado's tender first workings over the S&C back in Feb 2017 were timed to 40mph I think from memory.

Put it another way. The input data for speed (and also train load) on RTT do not necessarily give clues as to the maximum permitted speed of the loco or the actual weight of the train. For example, the timings for Clan Line on the British Pullman in a week are based on 75 mph. By contrast, the timings for Clan Line on the Chilterns and Downs charter at the end of November are based on 60 mph. So you can't use RTT to guess whether the 8F will go over Shap, which I personally doubt.

Having a pathing stop at Oxenholme is going to mean a very steady climb from there unless the heat supply unit on the back has other functions!

The individual section times on RTT are pretty silly really. 16 mins from a standing start at Oxenholme for the 13 miles to passing Tebay --- I'd like to see that. More like 25 mins.

I noticed that BIL was visible at Carnforth yesterday PM, although UK steam has these down as 48151

BTW I see that the Shap ones include a brief stop at Carlisle (although will the passengers be let off), so the kids may be able to see the motive power, on the ones going round the loop unless one joins at Carnforth you never see the engine as she is off the platform end at Lancaster, it was only the fact that I am well over 6' tall and can tell an 8f from an oblique angle that we had a clue what was pulling us last year.

I hope it's a mistake but I see that we arrive in platform 3 and depart from 5?? If the turn round runs to plan then 20 minutes in the platform should be enough time for a quick walk to the front for a photo.
