The Black 5 gives Swanage a hint of Somerset and Dorset, great pictures. Way back in the early eighties, the long gone, Swanage based LMS group started an appeal to try and rescue Black 5 45491, I think, from Barry.

On a day of weather more associated with the Cumbrian Fells than the Purbeck Hills 44781 on The Dorsetman. The first run had sun not long before and just after the train had passed. However the horizontal hail, strong wind and cool temperature made things feel more "Northern". At least the sun was out later. IMG_9988.JPG IMG_9998.JPG

I think you'll find 44781 is no longer with us (is that the one that ended its days on some film) - nice pics of 44871 though !

Agree, but the S&D was also 50% LMS.

It would be good to have a 4F loco as gala visitor at some time. It would really look the part in an S&D theme, running as pilot loco with a Southern Pacific or on a local train with southern green stock. Nice.

Apologies if off-topic but my Dad has been going through grandfather's old photos and found these two from 1966 at Swanage and thought the group might be interested. Locomotives involved are 34004 Yeovil and 41316. I imagine as my grandparents lived in Bexley at the time this was the end of the holiday and they would have gone with 34004 back to Waterloo.

Talking of the Somerset and Dorset...

The Swanage Railway is pleased to announce that it will hold an additional special event, the 'Somerset & Dorset Weekend', over the weekend of 17/18 November 2018. Featuring the last chance to ride behind ex-LMS 'Black Five' No.44871 during its current visit to the Swanage Railway (courtesy of Riley & Son (E) Limited), the event will evoke some of the spirit of the famous Somerset & Dorset Railway, that fabled cross-country rail route between Bath and Bournemouth.

Joining 44871 in operating the Swanage Railway's intensive two-train timetable will be recently returned to traffic ex-SR 'Battle of Britain' pacific No.34072 '257 Squadron', and ex-BR 4MT No.80104, both examples of classes synonymous with the Somerset & Dorset line. Normal fares apply over the weekend. Further details and the timetable with locomotive allocations are available from the Swanage Railway website at https://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/events/detail/somerset-dorset-weekend

Good to see S&D commemorative events actually being achieved in Dorset.

Now if the Squadron ran as 34107 Blandford Forum, borrowing the plates from said town, even if on one side, that would be worth seeing.

The occasional double header would help put an S&D stamp on it. Ought to be achieveable with 3 engines in steam on a 2-train service.
The five piloting 257 Squadron anyone.....?

It has been announced on Facebook that the Swanage Railway Trust has agreed a 99-year lease for the hire of Maunsell Third Open 1346, currently located at Ramparts. Ramparts will complete the body and mechanical overhaul then it will return to Swanage for interior fitting out, in the same manner to what has been done with similar vehicle 1381.

I thought it was owned by the Swanage - the VCT carriage survey also thinks that! Who actually owns the vehicle?

It was owned by a long standing member who sadly passed away earlier in the year. His estate obviously have come to an agreement.

For the S&D weekend, any chance of the Bullied coaches being out?

The plan is that the Bulleid coaches will be on the C set, which will be on every other departure starting with the 09:26 from Swanage.
