Photographic gray would be a real rarity. Be worth considering for the 47 when the time comes, and wouldn't be objectionable to those of us who think the G in GWS is a little underemphasised.

Tornado was turned out in a grey undercoat but the lack of lining and the black frames didn't give anything like the works photo effect. I find it surprising that even things like some pannier tank rebuilds of saddle tanks were given the official photo treatment by the Great Western.

Too late for Pendennis, the tender is already painted and lined so you will have to do it in Photoshop where anything is possible

Absolutely- I saw the film last week and think Lady Gaga would look great in GWR livery, or anything else really :)

Not so long ago MN No 18 from Carnforth was painted in Black as u/c prior to it's final painting - is this any different for 2999 in terms of the finishing costs?

Photographic Grey was mooted as a means of freshening up 5572 some years back. I thought it was a great idea, but it seemed to go flat when I pointed out that the lettering would still be in full colour & would therefore look a little odd.

I seem to recall that at least one A4 was turned out in photographic grey, but with the wheels in apple green...

Still there is one engine that has carried photographic grey in preservation: https://www.flickr.com/photos/loose...zww-bEB6UW-f1uPHd-6dJxer-fH76fG-Nrdy4m-teifBc

It appears from correspondence seen this evening that 2999 will be in plain black for the event on the 17th & 18th November .

Looking great. Big moment for the GW Society and our hobby generally. This seems to be the Lady of Quality side. I have a soft spot for the Redgauntlet name on the other side. There is something about those Sir Walter Scott novels and names that suite locomotives of this era very well.

I'm sorry but I don't see how the reveal of Frankenstein's Hall is a big moment for our hobby. Tornado being built from scratch moving under her own steam for the first time over a decade ago (how time flies!) was but this, not so much.

Good point, by the way I don't want my previous post to make it look like I'm denigrating the work of the GWS. 2999 is looking fine and I'm sure she'll look marvellous in steam hopefully next year.
