Might be interesting to work out how many other ''butchered" locomotives are out there. 60103 is of course a butchered A1, as indeed are a number of Terriers. No shortage of butchered Bulleids, a Stanier Pacific or two, and the Royal Scot too. Then the GWR list includes the Dukedog, several Manors and the 7200s...

Maybe a different colour of something to stop it oxidizing? Some sort of shade of green?

I suspect 5193 is far more use to the WSR as a mogul than it was as a Prairie.

I've looked all through my GWR Names, Numbers, Types and Classes book and I can't find a "Frankensteins hall". :)

I would really have liked to be at Didcot to see the Saint, but (yet another) rail strike on South Western Railway put paid to that idea. :(

I'm just wondering how long before the GWS dismantles it to provide parts for another two or three projects to recreate missing classes. ;)

Some of the parts have probably been used on two or three classes before the GWS got hold of them anyway!

Possible things to have done with a Barry-condition Hall would have included total scrapping and melting down; scrapping and salvaging some parts for repairing other Halls; restoring as one more operational Hall among many; and rebuilding into a Saint, leaving some wheels and other spare parts for other Halls. To my mind they made the right choice by a wide margin (and they had some money from me towards the project).

I understand there are a couple of parts at least on the Saint that are known to have been fitted on other Saints.

To a certain extent it's already planned:

    http://www.thesaintproject.co.uk/Pages/AtlanticOption.html

    I'm looking forward to it.

To those regretting that Maindy Hall cannot now be restored to operation, Cogan Hall's still in ex-Barry condition. Dumbleton's been stored outdoors longer than most were in the scrapyard. How strongly do you really feel about this?

I think she looks great. By GWR standards, different enough to be worth the compromises involved in development. Look forward to seeing her on the move.

Whatever opinions are held about this locomotive I was unaware that it had taken so many years to achieve its current condition. It must be a great joy to those who have worked on it and contributed financially to it and can now see it on show. I guess the final livery will be welcomed by all copper capped aficionados. I hope I get to see it someday in the south west. It would grace the Paignton line most assuredly. ;)

....or even a GWSR Cheltenham Races Special.

I'm sure there are knowledgeable people out there who can confirm this but I always understood that, if you were trying to tell the story of 20th Century steam locomotive development in the UK by using real steam locomotives to illustrate your point, then the "Saint" Class would be absolutely key to that story, as these locos set the pattern for passenger and mixed traffic 4-6-0s right up to, and including BR standard 4-6-0s. There is no doubt in my view that one of the original "Saints" should have been preserved, but one was not and so this GWS project has filled that gap. (This could of course be true of many of the new-builds we are now seeing). It is a shame that the "Saint" was not in steam for this event but I'm sure it won't be long now.

I really can't see it's anything to get worked up about. If they did what you suggest we would have ended up with yet another Hall much of which would nto have been original. The most expensive bit of a new build is the boiler so your comparison with a new build is not valid and without the donor Hall we wouldn't have aSaint.

I don't usually support the idea of using bits of locos to make something different, but I think the case of the Saint is an exception. The Saints were an important first step in a GWR dynasty and the Halls were essentially a Saint with small driving wheels, so this build could be seen as using a derivation to recreate an original. Is this so different from recreating an original Merchant Navy from a rebuilt one? A complete new build Saint might seem more appealing, but that was not an option when they started on this engine so many years ago. I just hope they manage to get it out on the main line and not just use it as a museum exhibit.
