It was originally an A1 but I suppose those opposed to recreations would say it wasn't preservationists who butchered it

    me too .
the GWR were fond of cobbling different engine parts together so I really cant see the problem with reverse engineering.
we really could do with a Star for her to play with . what bits and pieces are there knocking around ? and what would be a good name for a new Star.?
Star and Saint boilers were often interchanged so we just need the frames really. any old Castles around ?

It’s even easier than that :) we already have a star, 4003 Lode Star, so it’s simply just restoring that to running condition. I’m not a GWR fan but I agree they would look great together.

I think I'm mostly in agreement with you on this. In fact, since the prototype Hall was a rebuilt Saint, I think there's a rather nice circular logic to recreating a Saint from a rebuilt Hall.

I know --- but it seems a shame to wake her up--and she is in that rubbish post war green . I want one in 1910 condition finished properly with all the brass. I rate Lode Star as one of the saddest railway sights I ever saw.

I saw 4073 at old oak just before she went to Kensington . she was hidden away in the Pullman shed but nosey here found it . what a sight ! that is how a new Star should look

Sadly, and rather pathetically, for certain posters the fact that one is GWR and one is SR is quite enough to provoke the vitriol launched at it.

Especially sad as I suspect both companies had ceased to exist way before they were born.

She looks great and is the product of many hours of dedication by volunteers!

    Thanks Keith! :)
    I love such quality models!

Belive me but 1250£ is about average price for a super detailed model in my country;)

nowt to do with 2999 , but the cab on 4003 is wrong - roof/cutaway/depth .no purity of line ... all of which makes me wonder if she is on a Castle frame . or is she just an old engine that the works weren't bothered about

IIRC from the stories I have heard from the works, the suggestion is that she received a full general before leaving Swindon for the last time, the fact that she was going for static display was not deemed relevant when compared with doing a proper Swindon job.

4073 certainly had a full general before leaving Swindon . I believe somebody received a rollicking because it was not authorised , so I do not doubt 4003 had the same treatment----but that cab is a dogs breakfast

I just think they've done a bang up job, to be honest. Looks smashing. The story of the two cylinder locomotive in this country was always poorer without a Saint to look at - and now we have one to tell the full story.

For that alone we should be grateful, whatever the ins or outs of its build (and frankly, taking the Saint to Hall story full circle back to Saint strikes me as fortuitous and ingenious in its conversion).

Although I remain dubious of the use of the "130mph Saint" story Didcot is using to advertise the loco...! ;)
