Fresh from Facebook HQ is news that Andrew Barclay 2352 and LMS sleeper 617 are up for sale due to lack of finances and lack of interest. All enquiries to Mr S. Reeder esq. No major issues with the boiler as it doesnt have one. Sleeper nice and warm to sleep in during the cold season as its well insulated...

Grab a bargain folks and start 2019 with a ready made rolling stock fleet.

Is the sleeper wooden or concrete?

I know it's tantamount to heresy to suggest it, but how much would these two items realise as scrap?

Sleeper is likely full of asbestos which has to come out before scrapping.

So in other words, it's a 65' long liability. Other examples exist so little rarity value and it'll cost an arm and a leg to either scrap or restore.

Stuart's biggest problem is that the cost of the asbestos stripping is likely to vastly exceed the car's scrap value. I think the S&C did well to rid themselves of the liability. Link to Farcebook page: https://www.facebook.com/AB2352/

What's worrying is the reason for this. He must be planning another hare-brained scheme. Can anybody suggest what this could be ?

Which I seem to remember was pointed out to the seller who thought he knew better. He’s going to find out the hard way that it’s not an easy thing to get rid of when interest wanes.

I must admit though a LMS sleeper would make a good museum piece, not much real use elsewhere though.

I shudder to think, but what would the cost of asbestos removal be? A quick look at the VCT's website suggests of five original survivors, two have already been scrapped. The other two survivors are, I understand, used as volunteer accommodation on the Bluebell?

I notice from the JustGiving pages that the LMS Sleeper has raised £0 of a £600 target in 270 days, while the Andrew Barclay has raised £0 of a £1000 target in 317 days, so it is really neck and neck as to which will hit its funding target quickest. Still, at least that has minimised the donation transaction fees...

Probably £10-20k at a guess. I think it's been mentioned here that the Bluebell sleepers are near life expired too and not to be used much longer?

I almost feel sorry for him in that he must have wasted many thousands of his own? money dragging these lumps of scrap (and the inspection saloon) across the country.

I'd imagine that the money spent on disposing of the sleeper will make that look insignificant. SCR mob have dodged a bullet there and shifted the issue onto some other mug.

I think it is a bit of myth that has developed on here that the SCR wanted to get rid of it just because of the asbestos. It isn't the case. They would have wanted it gone even without asbestos because none of the members had any interest in it and the condition was getting worse and worse. In fact a number of items of rolling stock have left not just the sleeper. If anyone is interested in it they could always get a few quotes on the likely cost of asbestos removal before buying. The thing that will put many off is that it is a sleeper so no use to a preserved line unless converted to something else.
