I don't think any of the diesels are operational at the moment either, not saying you have all the toys out the box to play with at the same time, but that list looks very small.

Eustace Forth has been on steam heating duties at the NYMR over Christmas, but that was de accessioned a few years ago without a certain mag kicking a fuss up about it.

41001's operational, but like the 33 that's on a long term loan to another group. Is the 33 operational? Was thinking more of locos like 37350 and 55002.

the thing though is this how many of the operational engines weither diesel, electric or steam ,were restored by the NRM ? As far as I know none, either they came in full working order, or were restored by private groups using their own funding, compare this to when the NRM had the expertise and staff that saw 1000, Hardwick, green arrow all done in house as if to say .

The group that looked after 55002, are being refused access under a H&S excuse.
The group's leader is more qualified than anybody to run the show, but is being refused a call back, or dialogue according to FB.

The group have since relocated to Barrow Hill, and are accelerating the return of 55015 instead.

The NRM really needs to pull it's head out of it's backside.

To add to this, which NRM locos are being overhauled by 3rd parties?
    4F at Vale of Berkeley
    Lord Nelson at MHR
Cromwell and Sir Lamiel at GCR (5305 group)
    Is Maude NRM?

Thanks for that incisive and well thought out comment. It's really added to the discussion....

I don't think any of those overhauls have started yet Gav. I'm not sure if the 4F has had any work done on it since it left the GWSR in 2015?
Maude is owned by the SRPS

This 4F loco in the past was in running condition, I know it was somehow being worked on by the group at the GWSR that owned the Turkish 8F, now since moved to the Vale of Berkley. Would be interest to know more about what has happened to this locomotive in preservation ? Was it worked on previously by another group ? How has it ended up as a pile of bits.

Prior to going to the GWSR, didn't it spend a long time at Butterley? I don't think it spend long at the GWSR, and when it arrived there it had been out of ticket for a long time. I can't remember whether it arrived at the GWSR complete or had already been dismantled for overhaul.

It was at Butterley for some time before I think? Fairly sure it was already in bits when it arrived at the GWSR, don't know when it arrived but it would have been some time after 2010. The 4F was allegedly 2 years away from steaming when it left the GWSR. It is notable that both of the Hoskins (of the 8F group) resigned their directorships of Vale of Berkeley in late 2017. How much involvement they still have down there I don't know. Equally, whilst it was their group involved in working on it, I'm not sure that they or their group was ever actually the named custodian.

The NRM initiated a H&S policy, and required a competent person to head it up for KOYLI group, one of the guys' attached is eminently qualified.

They asked for meeting after meeting, got nowhere, no work done on loco, in the end became fed up, and moved on, to 55015 at Barrow Hill.

It is all available on the group's FB page, hopefully bridges have not been burned, however 55002, did have the dreaded leaking liner issue before the split.

I don't think it's the NRM, I think it may have more to do with their Government paymasters, I do think it's wrong that a group of people like that who want to work on a loco like say 55002, or 70013 are denied by someone pushing a pen in Whitehall, dithering.

You have a point there Matt, I'm sure that has some impact, but I do think that the management of the NRM must shoulder some of the blame for decisions that have been made and events that have unfolded in recent years.

We are talking about an organisation that spent £10k to ‘rebrand’ itself ‘Railway Museum’ - I dont think the comment ‘up its backside’ is misplaced to be honest.
