It was August 1976 - 42 years ago. Many on here will not know who Paul Riley was. This appreciation might enlighten them:

Whilst I agree with you mostly, if wibble and point scoring are to cause thread closure, not much of Nat Pres would be left.

I have no plans to visit the GCR in the short to medium term, either as a passenger or as a photo charter participant so I shall leave this thread in peace

If you knew Paul Riley you would know he was one of the old school risk takers living life to the full and hang the consequences. He always liked to gain height for his pictures and could have come to an untimely end falling from a tree or telegraph pole. As I understand it the general accepted cause of his tragic death was falling asleep and rolling off the bridge parapet, no trains within miles. It is possible to make life so safe it won’t be worth living with people being scared to get out of bed; but hang on most people die in bed so that must be dangerous too.

Its worth making the point that even an incident where the railway is obviously entirely blameless is massively disrupting - trains cancelled, buses to return passengers to their starting points, attendance of staff at inquiries etc etc

Does anyone really want this if it can be avoided

No the one way Paul Riley would never have left this world was being run down by a train

He died on railway property photographing trains. Do you not get that?

'Linesiders are sensible people who would never take risks, apart from my friend who did take risks and died lineside, but he's different so it doesn't count.'

How much more of a pinhead do you want to dance on?

First paragraph is wrong he wasn’t taking photographs and his tragic death has no place on this thread
