There is a large collection of well preserved electric locomotives in Switzerland. The well known "crocodile" is just one of them, here is a great clip of the brown Ce 6/8 II no. 14253 :)

Thanks again, Knut - that drawing has answered a question or two for me, like how many traction motors, how/where the drive is to the beam/jackshaft that drives the wheels... oh, and like the new avatar!

Just having a quick look, £65 flights, £100 for two nights in a hotel, transfers will be about £50 return. Not much change out of £300, but at least you can stick your head out of the window on the railtour!

The Krokodils are fantastic locos. You can see why the Swedes went to the effort of bringing one all the way from Switzerland for their 100th anniversary of electric trains.

Glad to hear that! They are very impressive these old electric locomotives. They have a more "living appearance" than many more modern electric locos. The Swiss ones also have a whistle like steam engines! :)
Engine Ce 6/8 no. 14305 were overhauled in Meiningen in 2017 and I have found this site with photos (you can click at each photos to enlarge them) :): https://www.dampflokwerk.de/portfolio-view/ce-6-8-das-schweizer-krokodil/

The Swiss crocodile is a really classic one also in model ,Märklin has produced them in many years. I`m sure there is posssibillity to get hand of one to a reasonable price also in the UK.;)

(My new avatar is the Czechian "Albatros" CSD 498.1 a mighty engine!)

That's not really a problem as three Krokodil together will draw about 5250 kw. The standard freight formation over the Gotthard used to be worked by a Re4/4 and an Ae6/6 in multiple drawing 10800kW. Before the base tunnel was open there could be 3 or 4 freights climbing each side of the pass up to the summit tunnel.

Lovely filming even if it was in standard railtour weather.

    Cheers, Neil

Ah, the good old days before the base tunnel when you could sit and watch freight after freight over the Gotthard. You'd also get an Re 20/20 occasionally - two pairs of Re 4/4 + Re 6/6 (an Re 10/10).

I believe 11801, the Ae 8/14 was out at the weekend as well. Slightly more powerful than the three Krokodils combined at 5408kW. Not too bad for an 88 year old loco!

I lived in Switzerland for a number of years and partook in a number of trips with the SBB historic fleet, here are some of my pictures of a fascinating collection of old wire scrapers

There is even a fair amount of steam out there despite their early adoption of electric traction

Very much looking forward to flying to Basel on Friday to do a railtour over the Gotthard with an Re 6/6 on Saturday
