According to Heritage Railway Magazine Met 1 will work with Sarah Siddons (and maybe a second steam loco) and operate three round trips between Ealing Broadway and High Street Kensington. The carriages will be the London Transport Museum's Jubliee Carriage 353 and the Bluebell Railway's Chesham Set. The Flour Mill will provide a GWR Pooley Van* to carry back up equipment and a water supply. The locos and stock would be based at Ruislip Depot.

This will be the last time that steam will be able to operate in the tunnels as the locos are not compatible with the new signalling system. The outer sections of the Met should remain compatible until 2022.

    * Does anybody know the identity of the Flour Mill's GWR Pooley Van?

Update 6/4/18: Reported by Heritage Railway Magazine that the runs have been postponed to February or March 2019 due to work being carried out on Sarah Siddons.

Update 2/10/18: The latest Heritage Railway Magazine reports that Steam On The District will take place on 16 & 17 March. The trains will run between Ealing Broadway and South Kensington. Met 1 and Sarah Siddons will top and tail the train. Coaches used will be the 4TC set, Metropolitan Railway no. 353 and Metropolitan District Railway no. 100.

Update 15/01/19: Dates has appeared on the LTM website.

I'm assuming that this means the Bluebell's Chesham set is, or will be, getting the renewals to door locks and brakes that it needs - will be good to see it back in action.

It was said a while back that the LTM were planning to run a set of steam on the district line trains from Ealing Broadway to High Street Kensington, but as of March 2018 no details have yet been added onto the LTM website and im now wondering if these trains will be running at all now as did want to go down to London in order to see these trains but now it's not looking likely if they arent realy gonna take place.

Can someone here provide me with any updates on what's happening with these trains as they were advertised as running on Sat 28th & Sun 29th July 2018 but to date there hasn't been any news on these trains, no info is up yet or any fares despite it being brought up via social media multiple times aswell as Heritage Railway & Steam Railway magazines.

Wait until an announcement. And don't assume it has been called off unless LTM says so. You may recall Steam on the Met was advertised a few weeks before so there's plenty of time yet.

Steam On The District has not been officially been announced by the LTM yet. It has only been reported in the railway magazines that they are planned.

The LTM only officially released info and tickets for the class 20 railtour to Quainton Road on Thursday last week, six and a half weeks before it runs. I expect a similar timeframe for Steam On The District.

I've looked on the London Transport Museum website and there's no information up about this, if it does end up running it will be about ruddy time as I wanted to do the runs this year but they never happened. Only problem I've got is on the same Saturday as this possible event there's the Cumbrian Coast Express, however I can probably postpone going on that till later on in the year as how often do you get to travel on LT metals behind a steam engine that will be around 122 years old over London Underground metals. I know it's gonna be expensive to travel down to London from Liverpool but it would be worth it as again how often do you travel behind steam on LU metals and also how often do you get on-board footage on one of these trains.

Your options for on board footage will be limited as the 4TC set has bars across all droplights other than the guards door. This is due to the tight LU sub-surface gauge. There is also a no heads out of the window rule on the older vehicles for the same reason.

Hopefully these trains will go ahead as the ongoing roll out of CBTC signalling on the sub-surface network will start limiting opportunities to run tripcock fitted trains in future.

    Regards,

    Dan

What's happening to make LTM say this will be the last time?

Resignalling - there are no plans for steam or other heritage trains to be compatible with the new system.

Is a real shame that as we've lost the cambrian routes thanks to this ERTMS system and now it's begining to close down the gaps as they're working on LU routes first. Im guessing that alongside the steam on the underground trains having to cease running were also gonna end up loosing steam on the met aswell.

It is a radio version of Thales' SelTrac S40 being fitted, not ERTMS. There will be Tripcocks retained on the section between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Amersham to allow Chiltern line services to continue, can't remember whether an 'overlay' or 'underlay' to SelTrac. Also between Rayner's Lane and Uxbridge, but not the short section between there and Harrow.

So in theory it is possible but major logistical challenges around the lack of protection between Rayner's Lane and HotH.

Never say never but, to the best of my knowledge, there are no current plans. Very happy to be corrected if anyone knows better. Since the signalling will be done in phases Sarah will get several years running from the current overhaul.

I presume that the planned trains on 16th & 17th March 2019 have been replaced by the ones on 22nd/23rd June. Is that right? I can find no mention of the March trains now, neither on UKsteam.info nor on the LT Museum web-site
