Nasmyth, Wilson and Company 0-4-0ST

Why has this engine been left outside to neglect when it should be inside on display not on a roomette peace of track where it can't be worked on? Are there any future plans for this machine?

It appear to be the only engine at butterley that appears to be abandoned to the climate and total neglect!!!!

Any information welcome!!!

Perhaps it is in a state that rules restoration out engines can be stored outside and still be restored mind For example At embsay they cosmeticly retored Wheldale a Gas producer fitted austerity for display in the bay at bolton abbey

I have however seen somewhere there may be plans for oswald but im not sure where this was

 

I believe that this engine is the only product of Nasmyth, Wilson that is preserved in this country although there are examples elsewhere. It is also one of the very few industrials that the company made. It would be a shame if it went due to neglect.

There are 3 preserved CDR locomotives in the UK which are products of Nasmyth Wilson - 828/1907 Meenglas (Derry/Londonderry), 830/1907 Columbkille(Derry/Londonderry) and 956/1912 Blanche (Cultra). There is also 827/1907 Drumboe(Donegal but being restored at RPSI Whitehead), which could be counted as being in the UK or the RoI at any given time!

Didn't I read somewhere that this loco was due to move to the Manchester Museum?

 

There's a possibility it may- nothing set in stone yet. Hopefully it will, as in Manchester it will be at leats cosmetically restored and appreciated more for its historical value.

 

The locomotive will NOT be moving to Manchester museum. The museum published the artical in a railway magazine without even consulting the Midland Railway Trust. The loco is cosmetically restored to act as "Oswald" the centre's talking engine and is a permanent resident of the Midland Railway Butterley's Swanwick Junction site.

Can this thread now be locked please? unless people would like to discuss other Nasmyth Wilson and Co. locomotives?

Why? The thread is about this loco, past, present and future. I see no reason why the thread should be locked or why anyone cannot discuss this loco, especially if it is deemed to be uncared for, as per the first poster's comments.
If you feel that the loco and/or the MRC are being unfairly criticised, then post a pic to refute what is being said and prove your point - don't just try to silence the critics by getting the thread locked, because it will never work and just make people think you are trying to hide something!

Anyone got a picture of the engine? Sounds like an ideal candidate for the MRC vintage train?

 

Shouldn't really be any need to post a picture. The loco is in all over blue and is cosmetically restored to a good enough condition to cope with outside storage. The MRC does get alot of criticism about some of its loco's. There is lots of stuff on site wanting attention meaning that other "less useful" stuff sometimes gets forgotten about for a while. I didn't mean to ask for the thread to be locked, just signed on to check for messages and found yet another thread on a internet forum damning the MRC for whatever reason they can think of. Not saying the original poster meant it in this way, I just took it as a moan! "Oswald" is on permanent display and I'm sure that if anybody wanted to do some additional cosmetic restoration on it or any other loco on site, we would gladly welcome them with open arms. It does get my back up when people moan about the MRC when they know little (only what info is given to the public) about what goes on 24/7. Yes, I have a little moan every so often about the place but to be quite honest, I volunteer there every weekend doing various jobs so I soon forget about it and do something else to make up for whatevers gone off etc.

Also, whilst I'm writing this post, the MRC is having a big tidy up working party this coming Saturday (bit late I know) If you want to help, a group of people will be meeting at Swanwick Junction at 9.30 for a safety brief. PTS will be required for some jobs so if you haven't got it or can't provide proof that you have, turn up at 9am for an additional safety brief and a short PTS exam.

C'mon lads surely such a rare survivor deserves a better fate than this!!!!!!!

 

At least it is an improvement on how it looks on the MRC stocklist site http://www.thorneywood.btinternet.co.uk/ . The Markham engine (and all the other industrials) look well cared for which is very positive for a mainline focused site.

 

I wasn't having a got at the railway. Just wondered what plans they had for this loco? Sorry if I offended anyone!

But if Oswald is such a cherished peace of railway history why it stood with no protection over the chimney, smoke box full water, Crank pins, piston rods, and guide bars cored and pitted with no grease protection and the boiler lagging full of water that has leached down the saddle tank doom aperture so allowing the boiler barrel to cored (this is a place witch can‘t be painted without lifting the saddle tank)?

 

I can officially confirm that the article published in Heritage Railway Magazine did not come from Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, or any of its staff.

As far as I am aware, the only approach made to MOSI about this loco was from a consortium of owners, and not the MRC who I beleive do not own the Nasmyth Wilson? Im sure the MOSI Railway Group would welcome the loco with open arms and with an aim of cosmetically restoring the loco, however, the decision of re-homing at Manchester would be made by persons at MOSI other than myself and the Railway Volunteers, and the decision will ultimately rest with those who currently own the loco.

 

I have been doing some research and contacted one off the owner of the locomotive, he has supplied me with some photographs of the locomotive 2 in it's working days, 2 undergoing a work overhaul at brown bailey steel Sheffield after purchase by the NW preservation groups, 2 as the engine was loaded at brown bailey steel Sheffield to transfer to midland project group.

The first two were taken in 1963:


The Second two were taken in 1972 undergoing works overhaul


The final two were taken in 1973 as it was transferred to midland project group


Such a sad way for an engine to end up after been transferred in such great condition.

 

Lovely photos Andy, thanks. Sometimes preservation is only one step removed from scrap yards, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way, it's just the way it happens with so many commitments and not enough volunteers!

 

if you go down to Patricroft, to where nasmyth works was, now its just new ind units. has got a small steam hammer on the main road as you pass the site. they now make vhf there thats a alco pop!

 

The original factory became ROF Patricroft, closing around 20 years ago. There was plate denoting the former use of the buildings when the ROF was open.

 

Please pardon my resurrecting an old thread, but I was searching for info about Nasmyth Wilson 829 'Drumboe' and came across this thread.
I've heard mention of Drumboe being cosmetically restored but not been able to confirm that. Do we have any Irish friends on here who can confirm what if anything is happening with the ex CDR locos? Condition? Locations?

 

There are 4 CDR locos preserved:

No2 'Blanche' Class 5A (956/1912) - remains on static display in the Ulster Folk and Transport museum at Cultra, Co Down. She is pretty much in 'as withdrawn' condition. Photo by Morgan Young.



No4 'Meenglas' Class 5 (828/1907) has been cosmetically restored by the RPSI and was returned to Derry on 28/01/19. It has been returned to its former location outside the Foyle Valley Railway museum at the end of the Craigavon bridge. This is a photo by D.Joseph of here arriving at the FVR:



No5 'Drumboe' Class 5 (829/1907) has been undergoing restoration at the RPSI in Whitehead. Funding from the custodians has now dried up, and they have an appeal to raise funds to finish the restoration and return her to the Donegal Heritage Centre (see https://uk.gofundme.com/bring-drumboe-home). Drumboe has had a fairly extensive mechanical overhaul including newly forged moting parts and replacement tanks/cab/bunker, with pretty much the boiler as the remaining item to be overhauled.

Unfortunately I can't find an up to date photo of Drumboe, however the last time I saw her the chassis was in the workshop and the boiler was stored outside on a flat wagon.

No6 'Columbkille' Class 5 (830/1907) - remains on static display in the Foyle Valley Railway museum in Derry. The museum has been reopened on a restricted basis by a charity called 'Destined' who apparently want to reopen the railway and look at returning at least one loco to steam.
