I was browsing the rail uk photo library when I came across this image of what I believe to be a Thompson Q1 shunting tank engine. This is the first time I have ever seen logo on any LNER locomotive, does anyone know when it was introduced and if any other classes carried it, I have a rough idea of the former as I believe the engine to be a Thompson design but as for the latter I have never seen it before, any thoughts?

EDIT: As has been pointed out this is photographic grey, and the question has been updated to reflect the actual area of uncertainty

    Isn't this just photographic grey?

So it is, I didn’t spot that at first, oops, I was thinking more among the lines of the LNER logo, or is this just a photographic thing as well, as other works photos don’t appear to have the teardrop shaped LNER.

The Q1s were a Thompson rebuild of some Q4 tender locomotives that were withdrawn. They used J50 tanks and cab components that had been built for J50 shunting engines (which did not materialise). By rebuilding these Q4s into Q1s, spare GCR tenders were freed up and could be allocated to locomotives requiring them.

They were one of Thompson's first rebuilds as CME and, dependent on which side of the coin you look at, they were either an excellent exercise in recycling in wartime austerity or a waste of resources on what was a powerful but range limited 0-8-0T.

    Thompson Q1 on LNER Encyclopedia

You can see on that page that the logo you speak of on another member of the class.

I've not seen it on any other LNER locomotives, personally speaking. That is not to say it did not happen. Best people to ask are those in the LNER Society.

Yeadon's Register of LNER Locomotives Vol 9 (Gresley 8-Coupled Locomotives) has on Page 49 a photo of 02 3835 with a painted version of the logo. According to the text this was the only 02 so treated, but it adds that the logos applied to the Q1s were cast plates.

Didn't they use this logo on some of their publicity material, too?

Certainly on both front and back covers of the passenger service timetable from October 1945 until further notice, so probably on other publicity material at that time.

The Mid Norfolk railway use this as their logo, but with the letters LNER replaced with MNR. It was quite widely used but not seen it used on any of the LNER trains themselves before.

It appears that the logo was used on road vehicles post-war, too.

    As does the NYMR.
As an aside, I wonder how many railways use the BR style totem without realising it is copyrighted?

Indeed, I have seen this logo multiple times on various other things but never on locomotives, hence my initial confusion

I would suspect most do, in some way shape or form, I had no idea it was copyrighted. Infact you can add me to the list of B.R. totem users as it makes up part of my model railway’s ( a fictional preserved railway) logo!

The Copyright is currently held by the Heritage Railway Association. I think that they are fairly laid back about its use although technically you do need permission.

I have seen one old poster of the M&GN also in the Deco style.
