S&C Pathfinder Charter - Aug 2018: Now 16/3/19 and with 60163

Just had this email from Pathfinder:

The Cumbrian Mountaineer 16 March
A steam hauled excursion over the Settle & Carlisle Line

We are delighted to advise that this excursion will be hauled by 60163 Tornado instead of A4 Pacific No. 60009 Union of South Africa as that locomotive is undergoing maintenance.

 

A positioning move was needed anyway. To get Tornado from Edinburgh to Manchester, for the Bard of Avon trip the following week. So that's a handy bit of income for the A1ST.

These are the moves in Carlisle tomorrow. 60163 is dropping back onto the front of the train; pulling the train to Petteril Bridge Jn and on into London Road Sidings. The diesel is pulling the train back into P3. Its detaching and leaving for Crewe a few minutes after we leave. Unusual using London Road.

I think London Road Sidings was used by Tornado on the 24th February 2018 in this way. 45699 was on a WCME and Tornado had done the S&C north, due to take the Tyne Valley to the east. It was the one where Tornado had a diesel pilot due to a TPWS fault.

Post from Mandy on the A1SLT Faceache Site that 60163 has passed its FTR.

 

60163 got to Carlisle High Wapping Sidings just before 0200 hrs.

Stock from Tyseley went down to Cardiff Pengam Yard yesterday.

 

Disappointingly Oswald will be unable to join the tour after failing a late FTR (arthritic knee - I can’t even drive to the station never mind sit on a train for around 12 hours). Hope it goes well for those on board and any who are intending to brave the forecast weather.

Thanks for that. A worthy load. Currently very heavy rain in Blackburn area and forecast to continue with increasing winds, let’s hope rail conditions are not too bad. I await your report with added interest.

 

According to rtt the 10.49 northern Carlisle to Leeds has only got as far as Appleby.
Possible rerouting via WCML?
Update.....just looked on Kirkby Stephen web cam and a dmu is sat in station. Southbound platform.

 

Looks like nothing is moving between Skipton and Appleby/Carnforth at the moment. 35018 with the Nigel Dobbing memorial train ECS is at Hellifield GL.

 

Flooding seems to be the prroblem - but not sure where, or everywhere.

That unit in Kirkby Stephen is the 1049 from Carlisle.

I wonder if the LE diesel path via the wcml to Crewe will be utilised. Means keeping the diesel on the back, but due to the conditions up here, maybe no bad thing. The Northern Rail website now saying that they are trying to source road transport for their services.

 

In view of the disruptions on the S &Cc plus Blackburn - Clitheroe it would make sense to reroute via the WCML.

Make sense to send it back over Shap as the unit is still standing at Kirkby Stephen.

 

It also shows a line block between Hellifield and Skipton on the signalling diagram for Skipton.
