If you think 'station' is something new then I mention that back in the late 1960's I found that that expression was used then. As oic of a fire engine I gave the instruction to the driver "Paignton station.". I meant the fire station in Paignton - we were going on stand by duties from a nearby town. On reaching the centre of Paignton the driver took a right hand turn (the road is a precinct now). I asked where he was going (or words to that effect ;)). He replied "Paignton station" meaning the railway one. Now this was an ex-mariner of middle age, so no modern vocabulary for him. :D

I really can't see why some people get so upset about 'train station'. It is a perfectly unambiguous phrase. As long as someone's meaning is clear, I think there are plenty of more important matters to get exercised about!

It was even used twice in PMQs today by the MP representing Chelmsford and in reference to a second 'train' station for that city.

Interesting pair of photos. It looks like the only structures to have survived are the station building, goods shed and the church.

An interesting pair of photos, Robin. Making comparisons it's interesting to see those vintage solar panels [skylights] in the first photo have been removed and tiled over and that scourge of many a photographer [in this case] the telegraph pole popping up in the second. Though on second thoughts, could it be the new "P.C." Jodie Whittaker Doctor Who's Tardis, complete with a gender neutral companion entering?

The house on the left with grey quoins is also in both photos, though somewhere along the line it has gained a small dormer in the roof.

I agree. Dr David Turner has pointed out that 'train station' was used in the 19th century. In terms of what is 'correct' I would suggest both are accurate, and those getting upset about it tend to be basing their view on what happened to be popular in their youth.

<grumpy-old-git>What are things coming to? The youth of today are using all the wrong words for things, I mean what's this "radio" thing? It's a "wireless" I tell you, a wireless!!</grumpy-old-git>

(Of course, now that it really is wire-less they call it radio!) :D

    Bring back Railroad, I suggest :) .
Radio 4 say train station now therefore the days of the railway station must be over. There is no going back, except on heritage railways I hope because that’s what they’re for. I remember my first visit to the K&ESR at Tenterden in 1975. The road sign pointing into Station Road from the High Street said ‘Light Railway Station’. Now the sign says ‘Steam Trains’ and it is brown.

Then again, why do we refer to a "telegraph pole". I doubt whether the wires were ever used for a telegraph service. For most if not all of their existence they have been for the telephone (and latterly for broadband internet as well).

This is really good news. Watchet has a get up and go attitude that is attracting investors. It could become the Beamish of the west.

Whist on a plane offshoot, when staying at my grandparents Gran would have the odd gin with the lady opposite, who kept a Cobra at the time. Little did I know of her achievements:
