Edinburgh-Airdrie-Paisley has been done before, and the write-up suggests Ayr-Troon-Kilmarnock-Mauchline Jn.

Hasn't this route become the most unfulfilled promise of all time? RTC asks and West Coast says "No path". It would be great to be proved wrong as I've never covered it but my money is on Annbank.

Don't you mean NR says "No path"?

Not at all. If West Coast cannot find a path that works for them when they put in the bid then there is no point in trying.

I don't think it is West Coast who find paths. In this instance RTC say to WC what they would like. WC pass this on to Network Rail train planners and it is they who say if paths are available or not. Very often what is requested cannot be met but the train planners will look at what alternatives may be available. But it is Network Rail who provide the paths as it is their railway.

I think we are saying the same thing. Of course, NR planners ultimately decide on timings but I was under the impression that the TOC (or loco owner where there is expertise) would suggest times in the first instance and if they couldn't find anything the chances are that nothing exists. And in the case of Troon-Kilmarnock I believe that is true hence my assumption that GBXII will, sadly, exit Ayr via Annbank.

One would assume service intensity presents more pathing difficulties over the single line sections after Barrhead on the Glasgow-Kilmarnock Road, which clearly isn't the issue here.

I don't recall many previous runs being routed between Troon-Kilmarnock (although one with 70013 may have been proposed to go that way, but didn't); it is substantially single track, but then doubles on the GSWR to Mauchline and beyond. However, all of this is just playing armchair train planner, and presupposes that gauging and other variables are fine. Time will tell.

When we discussed this at some length earlier in the thread, the conclusion was that the Annbank line was the most likely route. It doesn't look like any new information has emerged in the mean time

Can’t see an accompanying diesel path for day 9

The itinerary for day 9 seems to have changed from the times published. 35018 doesn’t seem to fit to what’s published which seems to mean Scotsman is now running throughout the final day. Also worth noting fast line running between Reading and Paddington!

Oh well, Annbank it is. Still a good day of travelling across the country for those on board. Nowt yet for day 6, though.

Day 7 - York to Scarborough in 70 minutes for 42 miles. Plenty of time to look at the scenery then although the day does introduce an unusual version of the 'coast to coast' steam charter.

We could do with some rain next week otherwise it could be squeaky bum time. Forecast looks dry in the south.

Please don't go there yet. As it stands there is a fair amount of diesel involvement already it seems and this tour is about as expensive as it gets. So unless you are not bothered about such things, the last factor you want in the mix is a dry weather warning. We are, of course, without Nigel Dobbing this year and he was a force to be reckoned with in respect of any diesel presence on his trips, believe it or not.

Weather in the north forecast to return to seasonal norm by Thursday or so, temperatures back at 12 or 13 and some showery days. In fact conditions for the northern part of the tour look distinctly temperate!
