35028's first outing after overhaul today seemed fine, despite losing nine minutes from the Shalford departure to Gomshall. Damp rails, perhaps.

It was annual maintenance not an overhaul, that was back in 2017. The Belmond is a heavy train and the timing to Gomshall is fairly impossible I think which is why they like to get away from the water stop early if they can

Not many out for 35028 today by the looks of things... here's (an almost in focus!) Clan Line going like the clappers through the rain at Betchworth.

Could be something to do with the weather! It was absolutely foul at the MHR this afternoon. 300 and L92 sounded good though.

That clip shows just how tricky it can be in the wet with such a heavy load. Not a climb unassisted for the faint-hearted and definitely an example of when the crew has to be familiar with both route and loco. Much the same for 10A crews and Shap where the added dimension is that you are on a major main line.

Does anyone know what happened today with the BBP near Dorking? I was positioned high above the line at Brockham, and 35028 appeared about 7 minutes late at about 10mph and working very hard to regain speed on the 1 in 144 to Betchworth summit. While the sound was stirring and continued for a few minutes afterwards, clearly something was amiss as the train is normally at around 50mph here.

Chalk Pit Lane crossing is approach-activated, so it was not a signal check. A few minutes after the train had passed a police pick-up truck arrived up the lane with blues flashing and siren sounding. Police and NR staff appeared to be searching the area around the crossing thereafter. Trespass?

It was going well past Blackheath Lane, in the high 30's.

Apologies - annual maintenance. I don't think the timing is "fairly impossible" (!) as it's usually done by 35028 (and even 34046) without a problem. As I speculated, perhaps the damp rails were the issue.

Ah. I saw two men in the field just before and the left of Chalk Pit Lane crossing - doesn't necessarily mean they were the culprits. I noticed a BT policewoman and a NR man at the crossing and there appeared to be damage to the fence adjacent to the barriers and if a vehicle had hit it. These were the two men, and the crossing showing the leaning fence with the NR guy examining. Edit - sorry; the system seemingly still won't accept photos from Apple products, so could not attach.

Good quality video as usual, Ashley. I hadn't realised the sanders are so noisy!

Thanks Ian indeed it was a noisy run through Chilworth, at the start of the scene my son is the small boy peering out next to the shelter but as Clan Line got closer he retreated back into the shelter to be with Mum!

Just for info, the wreath is because a key member of the MNLPS died recently.
