West Somerset Railway General Discussion

Discussie in 'Heritage Railways & Centres in the UK' gestart door gwr4090, 15 nov 2007.

How nice it would be for all the contributors of this lengthy thread to meet up on this rather special excursion on 8 June. It's only a tenner for 40 miles with a double-headed no-intermediate-stops with up to fourteen coaches.

The 40th Anniversary Weekend: enjoy an evening excursion

A local correspondent writes: "Some more information about the evening train on Saturday 8 June, which will round off day one of the 40th Anniversary Weekend. The fares for the train, due to be headed by no 7802 Bradley Manor and no 7828 Odney Manor and loading to 14 coaches are priced at a bargain £10 return for 40 miles of non-stop travel over the WSR, travelling from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and return. With the sunset at Minehead on that day being 9.26pm this will be a great evening out on the West Somerset. Tickets for the train can be purchased online now via the Events and Experiences 40th Anniversary section of www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk or 01643 704996. Rover tickets will not be valid for travel on the train."

Book tickets online (there's also a 'fish and chip' option :) )

Another coach repainted. Excellent. As I have said before, carriages are what the public come into contact with the most. It is therefore important that they are smart and clean. Some of them have been looking a bit tired recently so this is a good step forward.

    Hi, Steve.

On the Official website, in the section for "Evening Special", it says "An additional fee will be charged for travelling on this special service". I read this to mean you needed a rover ticket AND this additional ticket to travel. Can your "local correspondent" clarify this?

  3. Confirmed by WSR Plc. £10 per person (or £22 per person with fish/chip option). No Rover ticket required.

(Rover tickets are not valid on this excursion)

Perhaps "additional" needs clarifying on the website.

The loco roster for Sunday shows 53808 working a charter train. Does anyone know what this is? I'm not aware of any visiting trains from the "big railway" this weekend.

Without doubt a healthy profit there, but it’ll go towards keeping the Railway going.

Or you could look on it as £22 for a train ride with a meal to enjoy on the way, in which case it looks pretty good value.

Surely if the last few months has shown anything, it is that if we enthusiasts want to continue to enjoy steam railways into the future, we are going to have to be prepared to pay the premium for that enjoyment. Otherwise just get a bus.

On Sun. 12th May, the roster shown at wsr.org shows the following:

Class 37 no D6948. Diagram starts at Bishops Lydeard

Class 33 D6566. Diagram starts at Bishops Lydeard

Are the locos running one round trip each?

Thanks in advance for any replies. <BJ>

  13. My understanding is that the 37 does two round trips (one leg double-headed with a steamer) and the 33 does one oneway trip. Happy for others to correct me.

oh no, I’m away Typical. Always wanted to see manor/37 combo.

  17. I'd be delighted if there was! However, I think those Yarn Bomb people who have created the Italian display have crept close to the WSR banner :) The Yarn displays - all manner of topics and themes - are currently all over the village and are well worth a visit.

Can't understand the logic of the timetable for the next few days..... Saturday it's the blue one, Sunday the red, Monday the blue, Tuesday red, Wednesday blue...….

I'm sure there must be a reason for this but can anyone enlighten us?
