    A trick was missed, Making people get a service train back into London, Not offering a return trip that would appeal to the tourist market and secondly to the Diesel enthusiasts,
    Tell them in advance whats planned to be on the back and you will soon get the 33,37,47 even bodysnatcher bashers out.
    Best of both worlds then Steam and diesel in perfect harmony,

    Running around half empty on load 10 isn't going to make them a profit, so they need to reach out somehow if this is to work,

    As mentioned by Rumpole at some time the stewards have to clean the train (tables, toilets, rubbish to half brake etc) between trips and the turnaround at Waterloo is far to short for that. There is nothing worse than not having a clean train for passengers joining at a tour start point. It looks amazingly unprofessional, these are not a regular TOC offering after all.
    The third ECS path spends a couple of hours in SW Sidings, so that one is a no go anyway. I suspect most passengers would want a trip back around tea time and the stock is already at SWS being prepared for the evening tour.

    Extra weight make the Diesel grunt a little bit,Not as bothered about pure haulage as most on here anyway.
    That maybe so but thats just looking for reasons not to offer it,

    The 3rd one is a no go obviously, but the other two you could sit the diesel fraternity in one coach then clean the rest.

    something needs to be done to keep these profitable.

    But what do I know.

    Its a branding exercise, (hence the name, web site, the crown on the headboard and logo) aimed at creating or tapping into a certain market, the UK Tourist. Windsor is always going to be on the itinerary, as is London. Link the two by a steam train? why not.

    Thank you for this interesting piece of info. It has been widely known since steam started running in the south of England that the SE&CR lines in Kent were very tight gauge-wise, but I had no idea where the worst pinch points were. I can't imagine this bridge at Bromley South is the only spot with limited clearance as otherwise if someone wanted to run, say Flying Scotsman to Canterbury, routing either via East Croydon-Redhill-Tonbridge or Nunhead-Lewisham-Hither Green would solve this particular problem.

    I seem to remember Jim Clarke telling me that one of the clearances was very tight for Tornado

    I used Bromley South as an example, everywhere they looked to gauge Scotsman similar issues arose. Basically the largest locomotives you can get around Kent are Bulleid & BR standard Pacifics with their turned in cab roofs and Tornado which was built to be gauge friendly.
