I know you are in tease mode but to suggest, even in jest, that lugging around 500 or so tons on a regular basis is not hard work then I don't know what is. Rebuilt Merchant Navy locos are a class act whoever owns them and wherever they go. Any other Class 8 would be hard pushed to better what they can do.

Looking like looped for three trains at Grayrigg, away at 1245 to Penrith, looped for the 1327 then away to Carlisle arrive just before 1400.

There is no place on the WCML for something as slow as a 8F no matter how dependable a loco it may be.

Well actually, there is a place but sadly for passengers it's sitting in every loop and nearly two and a half hours to travel 64 miles from Carnforth to Carlisle illustrates that point.

This is not knocking WCRC for the sake of it but its unbelievable arrogance to send a goods loco out three times in a row and it loses time and causes delays not only to their passengers but the networks. Again as I said in my last post we'll never know the reason, but why not use one of the express locos, or even the Leander combination from the weekend. Yes they are important, but to play the game Virtual Monopoly is a dangerous game, particularly when Shap one of the prime properties could be put at risk.

Reasons first, I think...WCRC have had a lot of engines and crews on the road recently . I can't actually see any network delays ; it seems NR are doing a good job !!

82 late, problems appear to start at Carnforth and then multiply.

It could simply be that the 8F was all that was available. The Scot is being tweaked and you only need a hiccup with say BIL for the 8F to be the only alternative. You do what you can and having the train looped has at least kept it out of the way.

I believe BIL was scheduled to haul the train today but a problem was found, hence the 8F.

Makes sense for a 1600 arrival at Carlisle with a 1515 departure!;)

Anyway that's it now for the Chester Dalesman over Shap this year. What's done is done.

From a later post it seems that BIL may have been planned, much though it pains many of the “freedom of information from 10A brigade” we will probably never know. I wonder what the big red engine was doing today?

So we all complain about the use of diesels and now about using an 8F when the planned loco had an issue? As was said by others I can see no delays caused by the use of the 8F other than to its own train, so the only people to suffer were the tour passengers who got to know some loops quite well. But they did get what was sold to them a steam tour and at a load of 13 that implies 11 coaches which I suspect were full all some would have been removed.
Having said that the 8F seems to have struggled on the way back (like the Horton webcam which has gone down waiting for it)

Indeed it does. Right time leaving Carlisle, but 13L at Appleby, 24L at Kirkby Stephen and 42L at Blea Moor. I counted 13 coaches on the Kirkby Stephen webcam.
