Something like this would look quite smart for the one actually inside the booking office, and yes, I am primarily looking at drumming up more business with that nice gold lettering :)
    SDC11315.JPG

It doesn't necessarily have to have the glass screen either, but it would look good nestled in between those 2 varnished poster boards I lettered a few months ago.

Indeed I'm no fan of those snap frames, but I'm struggling to think of a replacement that would both look better and be as convenient. It's a shame that the wooden style ones weren't discovered before mass purchase. Buying a whole load of replacements probably won't be popular now, but even a coat of paint in the relevant GWR colour would help I suspect. I'm tempted to have a bash at painting some in wood effect...

If there's still a few single plastic ones left that won't be persuaded to be subsumed, perhaps a couple of these:

    SDC12424.JPG

Yes, as @Breva says, suggestions for some signwriting on the "coffins" to indicate a pretend purpose gratefully received - given they've already been painted in GWR colours, something GWR related would be even better. They have been placed rather prominently here, At Winchcombe and Toddington they're under the footbridge and out of the way. As for ramps on the trains, all that's been gone round before with various reasons against; one of the concerns is safely securing the ramps on a moving train - we can't just screw something into the wooden panelling as it's only a few mm thick so would require something actually connected to the metal skeleton of the carriage.

Blimey, Alex, you've got some good sources ! I rather like the individual timetable holder with decorative feet. That could replace a few plastic ones.

The Dartmouth line has highly visible yellow painted ramps on their platforms. However they are sited some distance from the principal part of the station and therefore do not need 'hiding'. They are at a point where the carriage that has ramp access usually stops.

I would prefer it had it said "Gloucs. Warks. Rly" or similar rather than "Great Western Railway. " Much the same as with the clock.

It's all your fault, ever since this sort of topic was raised a couple of years ago I've started looking a lot more closely whenever I visit other heritage railways and taking pictures of anything that looks good! It's also a good source for heritage fonts for signwriting, I've got a program that can trace letters from photos which allows you to fidle around with the details, or match the closest font it can find.
This was the inspiration for wood effect snap boards, this one's proper wood and proper heritage, but looks almost identical in shape - if you wanted to be really fussy you could put some brass screw heads on as well...

What, the actual gold lettering on the top to not read "Great Western Railway"? I'm genuinely curious here as to what the right course of action would be in your mind - If I was to take your suggested course of action, aren't we wandering into the realms of pastiche? How does it compare to, say, a new build coach that has an original company logo on? I can understand a museum curator's concern if it had nothing identifying it as "repro" but this seems to go further than that.
I'm really struggling to see this as anything other than mischief making Paul, you complain that steam railways don't make enough effort on the heritage side of things, a bit of teamwork produces this rather splendid reproduction item to add to the heritage feeling and yet you still find something to pick holes in.

This also goes for our carriages. We use a company logo, yet call ourselves a heritage railway. I think our Mk1s should have BR transfers, ferret and dartboard etc, but I was refused. I don't understand the why not. If we decide to use company logos, then they should go on the engines too ! If not, then not on the carriages either.

Don't go there, the battle's not worth it! I don't really understand why everyone's so attached to having our logo on the carriages, but they are, and given that's so, trying to force it through against volunteers' will simply upsets them and makes them less sympathetic to other heritage endeavours.

On a similar basis then should Tornado have A1 Steam Trust on the tender not a BR logo?

Please - No! It's bad enough having the GWSR logo plastered over all the authentic BR mark 1 rolling stock. Let's have authenticity where possible and create an honest impression of it when the real thing is not available (e.g. the new and impressive Broadway station). The idea of a 'living museum' is a worthy aspiration.

I suspect a lot of visitors to the station won't notice them and if they do they won't think they shouldn't be there. Indeed I suspect a there will be those who will be very grateful for then as somewhere to put their cup, camera bag, small child etc etc.

I believe many passengers, particularity youngsters, do seem to like heralds and even more so, named carriages and locomotives. That is, however, the experience of the Dartmouth line and a reason, I am sure, for the naming of their stock.

Painting "G.W.R." on a new, nicely made leaflet rack or an antique but non-railway clock does not make either of them "heritage".

How about painting "Isle of Wight Central Railway"? Is that heritage? How much in the photo is original IWCR and how much reproduction?

Of course it is, it's on the Isle of Wight silly, and therefore unimpeachable!
