    Hi all,

I am hoping that someone on here may have been passed down the technique for setting up the suspension on BR1 bogies.
I have the paper work for the set up with all the required measurements, what I am wondering is how they did the set up back in the day at the works, as the way that I am doing at the moment is pretty time consuming.

Finger crossed someone was passed this on and can speed this job up for me.

    Cheers

    Rob

Hi Rob, what specification are you working to, CEPS 1086?

    Regards

    Hi Richard,

Yes we have CEPS 1086, so have all the measurements and points to measure at.

    Hi Rob,

I don't have specific experience on BR1s, but when I've independently assessed Commonwealth bogie set up in the past, I used a proforma which helped speed up the task considerably, as well as make sure all of the dimensions are properly recorded for vehicle records. In my experience, half of the time taken is reading and re-reading the spec, unless you're lucky enough to have a photographic memory!

When I was with BR the standard method was to set the bogie frame height first using all four corners, they must all end up at the set height. Setting the bogie frame up first takes into account variations in tyre thickness. Then use the bolster springs to set the buffer heights, this can be a fiddly job as adjusting just one bolster spring can affect the height of all four buffers. After setting up initially is always a good idea to run the coach about in the yard before checking it again.

Set up must be performed on straight and level track that is ideally set in a rail height concrete floor. Better for setting bolster springs as you have a flat solid surface to jack from to take the weight off the bolster springs so that they can be adjusted.
