Just noticed looking at Swanage webcam that T9 has been moved. I was all excited but a visit down to town established that it has just been moved along the siding.

    ''Services for Thursday 12th September.
Note: Today's services will by operated by a heritage diesel loco''

D6515 is at present coupled to the stock at Swanage this morning. <BJ>

Yes I think the term "Classic" as similarly used to describe cars over 25 years old would be more appropriate.

Hope they get the steam locos sorted.
The A4 is on it's way. Looking good.

At what stage does a loco built in 1960 become “heritage”?

Probably at the same stage as Mark 1 coaches are generally considered ‘heritage’!

actually, looking at the Corfe Webcam the Swanage bound 1200h departure from Norden looked well patronised.

"Heritage" is a marketing buzzword which can't be defined. Mark 1s do not become "classic" but simply old.

Excellent, if you can't define heritage then you can't complain when heritage railways refer to themselves as such! :)

Do they not? A well restored Mark 1 can be an excellent vehicle. Sadly, this is countered by the amount of ‘make do and mend’ that many Mark 1’s are subject to.

That drum has been banged for so long on NatPres that I think the discussion itself is approaching heritage status ...

Non sequitur time is here. Tourist/leisure railways ought not to use the equivalent of "farm fresh" for dairy products which is what "heritage" is

80104 on the 1400 ex-Swanage. It should have waited until the arrival of the A4 but has gone out ahead of it.

An old discussion perhaps but one which needs to be constantly revisited to determine the role and relevance of steam railways. The evolution of railways is ongoing and naturally more locomotives will reach the point where they are "old enough to be interesting"... at least to somebody! If you don't have some definitions about what is relevant to run on your railway then you end up like the classic car scene (as mentioned above) where people claim their 1980s/90s vehicles are classic because nobody can prove they aren't!

What should that cut-off be? Should it purely a date or is type of locomotive also relevant? I don't know the answer to those questions but people need to be asking them to prevent our preserved lines becoming loosely themed "anything remotely old and railway connected". This is vital for historical, educational and enjoyment reasons.

The Bluebell always seemed quite clear in their own aims as far as history was concerned. Perhaps Swanage should seek a clearer statement of intent about what they are preserving; the original society(ies) were rather vague about that and if it has been updated it doesn't appear to be publicly available.

I think that most reasonable people would consider items to become "heritage" (or "classic", seemingly in the case of cars) once they are obsolete and no longer in daily use. THus, whilst Mk 1s can still be seen on the main line (and on non-main line operations) they are only in for the nostalgia based operations and have been in that postion for many years now, Even the succeeding Mk 2 generation have similarly gone as well, so wow can Mk 1s not be considered "heritage"?
