NYMR Autumn 2019 Gala

Just two days to the War Weekend and there's a resounding silence as to what will be going on traction-wise, other than strong hints that the King will be running.

Will a roster be issued, like the one for the gala?

We are planning on running the King from Newbridge.

Friday 18th until Tuesday 22nd

Friday 25th until Tuesday 29th

Friday 1st Nov until Sunday 3rd

Please note the loco will start on the 1230ex Grosmont each Friday.

Hope this is of interest to the membership and it is the provisional plan barring any break downs and other operational requirements.

To add to the above, I wouldn't be surprised if a roster wasn't issued as the Locos are more secondary to the event when it comes to war weekend, as opposed to Gala. I would think the usual daily Roster will be on the website.

 

Anyone PLEASE identify the loco under restoration in the shed down by the tunnel mouth

Which viewing area, the one by deviation? In which case its Helen, and sometimes Peggy sits outside 1 Road as it fits nicely!

 

6023 will be out on all three days of the Wartime Weekend. It will work the G2 loco diagram each day, which involves two round trips to Pickering. That is the first non-Whitby loco off Grosmont. The actual diagram varies each day.

Certainly looks like the GWS[?] are making the most of the King visiting the Moors. By piling on the mileage, what with 6 round trips over the wartime weekend [18 x 2= 36 x 2 =72 x 3=216]

 

Between now and the end of season it is planned to cover 1188 miles.

 

Wasn't really excluding any other possible mileage, rather highlighting that they were taking advantage to build the extra milegae and using the wartime weekend as an example over a short period.

in the shed -- surely it cant be HELEN as that's the diesel -- isn't it???

Just to re-iterate -- as you look (from the Deviation shed viewing area)
its in the covered shed (far left road of 2/3 roads) -- its not in the small
shed directly next to the water tower BUT over from that???

No. 3 road is a dead road with nothing on. No. 2. road has 34101 at the rear and 75029 at the front. Both are without boilers.

 

Or are the NYMR making the most of their investment? Certainly will not have been a cheap loco to bring in. Either way, it is a win for everyone - a king over the moors and extra money towards the next overhaul.

I never thought I would see a king on the NYMR and it was nice to hear 6023 having to do some work - however the biggest battle the driver seem to have was keeping her somewhere close to the speed limit, nothing else seem to trouble her! I really hope she gets an opportunity on the mainline next ticket.

 

It's quite a nice, refreshing idea for a railway to hire a loco in for a gala but then keep it for further running days afterwards. Gives more opportunities for the general public to see it, opportunities for more crew members to have a go on a different loco, offers more opportunities to recoup the cost of the road transport through passenger sales. Part of me wonders why it has become commonplace for locos to do flying visits for galas, rather than take a few weeks' holidays. The latter option seems to offer more of a win to pretty much all parties involved.

 

Partly it's due to the gala seasons being quite condensed, with most majorly galas within weekends of each other. It can be attractive to locomotive owners to have their engines gain the maximum exposure at several railways in a short space of time, meaning that the engine is in theory away from home for a shorter stint than if each of those railway visits were several weeks long. This also means that locomotive owners are having to provided loco reps/support crew for shorter durations.

There's also the benefit for the railways themselves, where cost of low loader movements can be shared between railways, or reduced due to the shorter trips the locomotive may be making between railways in comparison to each railway transporting the locomotive to and from it's home base.

I daresay that, while it can be considered that the NYMR are making the most of the money they spent transporting No. 6023 to the North East, it is also likely that the engine had no vital reasons to leave the railway early such as being needed for another gala or at Didcot. Therefore, to gain some additional guaranteed steaming dates at NYMR is a positive addition to the gala visit.

 

Speaking as a member of a loco owning group, whilst a longer visit is nice there's the consideration of if your home railway can spare you for a few weeks away and then the small matter of your support crew being able to support the loco for a number of weeks a long way from home.

 

I for one quite agree. Having said that I recall that the owning group had planned to go "Mainline" [hence the cut down chimney/brass bonnet/cab etc], unfortunately there were IIRC a number of glitches that lead to a change of mind........ So why not jump at the chance of clocking addition mileage and ironing out any glitches and perhaps re-applying for "mainline" approval.
