You're not wrong. See my post above and earlier threads about the NRM. Their development plans have been clearly laid out in their policy documents.

    I'll stand corrected - I wasn't aware of those.

It does seem perverse to take this power car back to being a static exhibit when it would have been capable of continued operation, rather than waiting until some kind of fault forces withdrawal from active service.

Is part of the problem the engine in the prototype is subtlely different to the production versions. If not historic common sence would put in a CAT or some other alternative but that would destroy historical accuracy

To be fair, it is currently suffering from a fault, albeit I believe minor.

Some members of our movement are utterly childish, the NRM are always portrayed as a baddie and I feel for them in this respect. I doubt they took the decision lightly.

I expect a response like that would have gone through the lawyers before being published.

What a shame on all fronts, hopefully the issue can be resolved as I’d like to hear a proper HST again some time.

there seems to be an influence of chief strategist Dominic Cummings in the NRM response . putting dirty washing in public is never a good idea

I fear this will further alienate the NRM from heritage sector involvement and operation of the fleet which is regretable

Wrong and people have forgotten there is a museum. Not a heritage line or operating group.

It's odd how so many of the responses seem to be plain disbelief that the NRM is telling the truth. One accusation of them being 'jealous'. Some tweeters seem to think that it's fine to breach an agreement as long as the loco is kept running.
I do hope the 125 group are successful in acquiring their own kit as it is easier when you own the stock you operate. So many fallouts from breakdowns like these in preservation, such a shame.

The original engine was taken out and sectioned. The loco was revived using one of the production HST Valentas removed during re-engining.

I think the 125 group have been sensible and from what I've been told have several power units.

I'm just going to post this before I go and shut my eyes, but there seems to be something not right at York, regarding 41001 someone I know helped make it happen (he knows his stuff) it's disappointing for someone like him.

Whilst none of us know the full story, it is a fact that the 125 Group did get the locomotive fully restored and running. They have also raised £85,000 of a £100,000 target to have a dedicated 125 depot building at Ruddington. They do seem surprised about the stated concerns of the NRM - there should be a "paper trail" of prior correspondence?
Anyway, I sincerely hope that the Group will now get a pair of production power units.....and retro fit a Valenta in one of them!

"The 125 Groups response to this statement:

125 Group has worked with the National Railway Museum for the past 8 years to restore 41001 to operational condition and to allow this unique vehicle to be experienced and enjoyed by many people during that time.

We regret that we have been unable to reach an agreement with the Science Museum Group to continue to look after 41001.

The relationship to date has had a positive outcome and has allowed 41001 to be displayed and operated in a variety of locations and to a wide audience, in line with the objectives 125 Group agreed with the NRM at the outset of the loan.

The Trustees of 125 Group are shocked by the recent SMG/NRM statement and do not recognise the accusations made that it has been negligent in it’s custodianship of 41001.

Nor had they been made aware prior to being advised that the agreement would not be extended, of any material breach to the terms of the existing agreement.

The Trustees were expecting to enter into a period of negotiation over a new agreement and therefore this recall to York has been something of a surprise to us all.

We have always cared for 41001 as if it was our own power car. Whilst it is regretful that this decision has been reached, 125 Group will work to redeliver the vehicle back to the NRM at York and to the SMG in accordance with the existing and soon to expire loan agreement.".

A museum should be a museum. Not countless video displays, not numerous refreshment facilities, not a curator/interpreter-less line of exhibits.
It is not just York. Liverpool is the same.

It needs to be a place where there is a public area staff presence to explain the workings of things, and to allow access to displays.
A place where exhibits are looked after/maintained by staff who know what they are doing.
A place where a question asked can be answered by staff there and then, not 'E-mail us in the week when someone might be able to answer your question', and you
then wait 8 weeks for a reply, then you resubmit your question again.... ad infinitum. Until you give up.
A place where children are NOT allowed to run amok through the building, screaming and shouting whilst opening and slamming doors on a historic vehicle,
or riding up and down in the disabled lifts whilst the parents have a 'quiet drink'
A place where a 'Reserve Collection' can be accessed on a regular basis by official tours.

Most National Trust/English Heritage have the balance just right. Room staff who have local knowledge, also clean 'their' area and keep an eye on the visitors.... 'behind the scenes' tours
to non-public areas are often easily arranged ( 'I'd like to visit P****** Castle to take some photos from the other side of the exhibits for a model. Is it possible please?' Reply: 'Yes When do you want to come?'
The Shuttleworth Collection has delicate aircraft on display, nearly all of their Collection (99% I believe) is in an airworthy flying condition, yet they too can offer 'hands on' and 'up close' experiences to visitors.

The National (Railway) Collection at the (National) Railway Museum is certainly not that any more.
