    Couple of the books I have show a selection of Lancasters' being used as test-beds for various engines not just jets. With regards to being jet test-beds a couple had jet "pods" fitted into the bomb bay. One of these was a Swedish test-bed with the jet pod slung under the 'bay rather like a torpedo on a Swordfish.....

    The reason for the photo in the parish magazine, there was recently a talk by a historian concerning the fact that the New Cheshire Salt Works made some land available where a building, F2, was constructed for secret testing by Metro-Vickers. They had wanted somewhere away from the threat of air raids, but convenient to Manchester. Needless to say, the locals were bemused by the noises emanating from this building. On the 21st September this year a stone plaque, originally above one of the doors of F2, was unveiled in the entrance hall of the Wincham Community Centre.
