Been going through my old notebooks and I have a number of ex BR steam locomotive tenders recorded and I would be interested if anyone knows any details of the last locomotive they ran with prior to withdrawal as well as whether they are still existing, if so where and paired which which preserved locomotive?

    Here goes :
    ADS70224 & ADS70225 Schools Tenders at Bluebell in early 90s (30911 Dover & 30915 Brighton respectively?)
ADS70227 Schools at Selhurst seen in 1992
ADS70229 another Schools (from 30923 Bradfield?)
    CDS70182 - for C Class 31592?
ADE330982 - ex B1? On of two exLNER tenders that were at Hitchin in mid seventies
70840 - at West Somerset Railway
ADE330576 - LNER tender at Stratford in 1991
Swindon Works used for oil - 2x GWR large tenders ex Castle? Also two with R.O.D lettering which looked ex GC?(1981)

Any details would be gratefully received.

One of the Swindon GWR tenders ended up with 3802, the other with 3862 I believe.

Thank you Martin. I found quite a bit of information for GWR tenders on gwr.org.uk
Anyone know of any information sources for the Schools and/or LNER tenders?

of those Tenders that we know about their last loco they were attached to, were these locos dispatched at the depot, or sent to scrap minus tender, or with a tender from another engine?

The story of tenders is probably the most complex story in preservation days, as an engine earmarked for scrap would I would imagine, if an early candidate for withdrawal has a better tender than another of the same class , then would that engine swop a tender in bad condition for one from a withdrawn engine to see it though to the end? then you have tender swops at Barry, when groups who purchased their engine, are told, that tender from that classmate is better, then of course, you had tender frames being reused as depot movement vehicles , test beds, water carriers, I would imagine that when a lot of engines are withdrawn, then those need to got out of the way so tender swops are less likily, where as a few withdrawn at a time cut up on their depot, the tenders could be re used as what ever, hence the schools snowplough tenders, as there is no onward movement requiring a tender, how many of those schools class were actually cut up at Eastleigh when withdrawn in 1961-62, then if you think, it was a standard southern design of tender, that also was used behind the U class locos, how many of them were in turn cut up at BR workshops and tenders released for either further use, or departmental use.

Thanks for responses and yes, I agree. Tracking tenders (or any other connecting part of a loco) is complex for all of the reasons Martin mentions.
I have a few poor quality photos from 70's and 80's showing some tenders which looked like they've just been disconnected from their locomotive and not adorned with any new metal. At my local station of Hitchin, there were at least two that could be found parked either behind the station or at the Midland depot sidings, both having LNER heritage and one likely to have been from a B1. There seems to be no records I can find that show where these came from and what 'parent' they finished their working life with?
Some of the tenders reveal their numbering when being dismantled and restored but others are seemingly harder to pin down.

I can remember when there used to be a slurry carrier outside Guildford station, just before the tunnel mouth and an second vehicle, clearly an former loco tender right up till the late 1970's both these vehicles ended up in preservation, as at the time any former Southern tender frames were clearly of interest, this was of course before the former Schools class tender snowplows became available.

There was up to a couple of years ago a coal tender on the old turntable at the rear of Hither Green shed, I could not make out what class of loco it was as I was looking through a train window of an electric train going at a rate of knots past the depot on the Dartford loop line, it seemed small compared to other tenders the only class that came to mind was the C2X class, not sure if its still there or its where abouts.

I managed to glean some more details for some of the tenders I listed at the top of the thread and thank you for those that have responded and helped.
What I've concluded is that it is the exLNER tenders most of which will have been scrapped, that seem to have least information available. Also that whilst some tenders such as Schools, have been identified by original number and can be tracked to the locomotive last coupled to when working, in other cases there doesn't seem to have been detail recorded in the case of tenders used on the ER.
For instance, a few B1s were taken into departmental use for a short period as steam heating boilers for carriages and some were allocated to New England, Peterborough. B1 Number 25 which I believe was 61272 was used at Hitchin until 1966 before withdrawal and scrapping. Could it be that the tender that remained at Hitchin into the 1970s could have remained from this locomotive or is this possibility too tenuous?

A rather late reply but this is the information I have:

ADS70224 Believed scrapped in the early 1990's after parts removed for a new build Bulleid tender
ADS70225 Still intact as a snowplough on the Bluebell Railway http://www.ten.rhrp.org.uk/tens/TenderInfo.asp?Ref=226
ADS70227 No definite idea. I'm still trying to work out what happened to this one
ADS70229 Still intact as a snowplough at the Colne Valley Railway. Some parts maybe used to construct a tender for Merchant Navy 35010 http://www.ten.rhrp.org.uk/tens/TenderInfo.asp?Ref=225
CDS70182 Now restored and running with SECR C class 0-6-0 no. 592 on the Bluebell Railway http://www.ten.rhrp.org.uk/tens/TenderInfo.asp?Ref=85
330982 (LNER Group Standard 4200 gallon tender) Had been converted to a snowplough. Almost certainly scrapped though a couple like this were bought for preservation but seem to have subsequently vanished
70840 (ROD 4000 gallon virtually identical to the GCR Robinson 4000 gallon tenders) Tank used on the Robinson 4000 gallon tender currently coupled to O4 2-8-0 no. 63601. The chassis seems to have been scrapped though I have never found definite confirmation. NB the actual number was 070840 a Western Region internal user number as this tender was previously owned by the GWR http://www.ten.rhrp.org.uk/tens/TenderInfo.asp?Ref=316
330576- I can't trace a former tender with this departmental number

Two tenders were purchased by the B17 group, one LNER and one GER, which could be the two you are referring to as having vanished. They are reported as being on the Mid Norfolk Railway, but never seen any evidence.

I found this source : www.lner.info/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4475 that confirms that the two Hitchin tenders were DB330982 and DB330965 although not their original numbers and last pairing at withdrawal.
I've also found in my notebooks a record from Vic Berry's yard in Leicester of a B1-type steam tender in February 1991 along with D8243 being scrapped. No number for the tender was recorded though.

Late comment re ex GWR designed tenders at Swindon Works & elsewhere on the Western Region well after the end of WR steam.

In late 1981(?) a 3500g Churchward tender was in the concentration yard (where locos & rolling stock were scrapped). This was purchased by the GWRPG for loco 2885 & is now at Tyseley where the loco is being restored under its current ownership - Practical GW Steam Ltd. This tender is understood to be T1888 though hard evidence of this is yet to be found. T1888 is thought to have been the last Churchward tender to remain in BR ownership (BREL in this case).

A 4000g Collet tender was placed on an isolated length of track & used as a waste oil tank. This tender was acquired by the Erlestoke Manor Fund from BREL in the early/mid 1980's for use with 7802 & is currently at Bridgnorth.

Two 4000g Collet tenders were in the Con yard into the 1980's & one was acquired by EMF subsequently being resold for use with 7027.
The exact fate of the other is not known but it is believed to have been preserved - possibly now with 3802?
Both these had seen use as waste oil carriers, a function which helped to protect them for preservation.

Other ex GWR tenders were still in BR ownership in the late 1970's/1980's including:
4000g Collet at Taunton Sleeper Works - now with 5967
3000g Collet at Tavistock Junction Yard, Plymouth - purchased for use with 7812 when first restored, now with 3803 - tender no T3029
4000g Collet ditto - believed purchased for preservation & rebuilt for 9351 as a 3000g tender
4000g Hawksworth (County Type) at Laira Depot Plymouth - subsequently scrapped
4000g Collet at Old Oak Common Depot - purchased for 5029
4000g Collet at Acton Yard - purchased for 4953
4000g Collet at Bristol Bath Rd Depot - purchased for 4936
4000g Collet at Gloucester New Yard - purchased by DMLL & now with 7820
4000g Collet at ditto - Purchased for 3862?

This list may not be exhaustive & it is extremely fortunate that these tenders survived to largely make up for tenders sold on by Woodhams and subsequently scrapped.
