No. Abergavenny demonstrated the stark difference in performance.

Two steam charters within 11 minutes at Abergavenny !!
44871 from Slough - Bristol Parkway - Shrewsbury (pass Abergavenny 10:50).
60163 'Tornado'. Steam hauled from Gloucester to Shrewsbury (pass 11:01).

44871 appeared to be checked shortly before Abergavenny and then opened up through the station with a small slip.
Very nice to watch with Tornado blasting through at speed shortly afterwards.

There were 5 mad fools stood in the heavy rain on the footbridge to the north of the station. Yes, I was one of them. <BJ>

A couple of edited video stills of today's two runs up the Welsh Marches route. Taken (from the correct side of the boundary fence) in the very grim conditions just to the south of Abergavenny Station.

Thro' the deepest gloom and with a gentle purr from the chimney, 44871 approaches the top of the climb at Little Stretton........

My footage of the Black Five producing insane exhaust and noise through Abergavenny ready for the climb up Llanvihangel Bank, even the diesel was doing nothing until it passed me.:) Also the video features Tornado's 70mph run through the station. Enjoy.

Plenty of noise from both ends as we get away an hour down from the Craven Arms water stop. Interesting to watch WCR staff try and jump start a mk1 suffering lighting issues too

Love the motion blur on the 60163 shot. Just like the old days with slow speed film.

Departure from Shrewsbury was awesome, but for those at Ludlow waiting for an hour with only a small open shelter, a real let down plus the contrast with Tornado . Crewe ??
