One further ex GWR tender "rescued" from Swindon works to add. Tender 2334 (or the chassis of it without a tank) was purchased from BREL in the early 1980's & formed the basis of a heavy rebuild with new frames & tank. That tender has seen service with both 7802 & 7812 since being rebuilt & no doubt will see further service with both at different times in the future.

T 2334 had apparently been adapted to carry engines from "Blue Pullman" power cars around the works having been originally build as a Churchward 3500g tender.

I've found out some more about an LNER and a GER Holden tender that are being used for the two B17 builds, the latter static?

The LNER tender 7163 is indeed located on the Mid Norfolk Railway and there is an image on Flickr of this taken near at Hardingham? https://www.flickr.com/photos/16521...Bsj-oV25HE-pcew6g-pcvqaa-cwm5D1-pasAgG-oUZn8D
The GER Holden tender is at the Mizen Miniture Railway in Woking, Surrey.

I have memory of two ex-LNER tenders that could be seen at Tinsley TMD until into the early 80s at least. Details of these are also scant.

Much appreciated 1472 - there was indeed a 3500g Churchward tender in Swindon CON yard in late 70s, early 80s although I don't have personal photo record of that one. The two Collet 4000g oil carriers had No1 and No2 painted on their sides but no more. I would love to know the King, Castle or otherwise GWR loco that these last ran with. The ROD tender had centre wheelset missing and had faint number 1989 on the side.

Interesting that 5967 sourced a tender from Taunton. I believe the tender that went with 5967 to Woodhams is now the one found at Didcot in unrestored condition

The LNER tender at Woking is reported as a LNER group standard 2862. Purchased from a Doncaster scrap yard. Whether this is the same one or not, does not look like a GER tender. If it is not I wonder where that one is?

All interesting stuff - a word of caution re numbers though. As an example T1888, according to the records, was sold for scrap along with loco 2210 & we have yet to find stamped evidence of the number on the tender itself although two water feed pipes have that number stamped in them. Unfortunately the official records are unreliable & they seem to have become so in about 1962/3. There are other tenders without disposal info but checking that requires a search through each entry!

1472 gave this handy information about the Swindon tenders:

A 4000g Collet tender was placed on an isolated length of track & used as a waste oil tank. This tender was acquired by the Erlestoke Manor Fund from BREL in the early/mid 1980's for use with 7802 & is currently at Bridgnorth.

Two 4000g Collet tenders were in the Con yard into the 1980's & one was acquired by EMF subsequently being resold for use with 7027.
The exact fate of the other is not known but it is believed to have been preserved - possibly now with 3802?
Both these had seen use as waste oil carriers, a function which helped to protect them for preservation.

I have found this photo on Flickr
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/dubde...L-25cAVe8-25cAVhz-4uPMrq-6Q9whX-D3L6W3-8KJRHE

The tender has a number '1' painted in the BR emblem. Can you confirm that this was the tender resold for use with 7027. As far as I am aware the Collett tender on the isolated piece of track never had a number painted on it.

There is some evidence that one of the tenders was T2631 though the records show that one as being sold for scrap along with loco 4918,. Evidence again from stampings on water feed pipes.

Yes the tender in the photo with the then unrestored 7802 was the one subsequently resold to P Waterman for 7027. The tank of that tender has recently been further resold to the group restoring 4979 but as far as I am aware the chassis remains with 7027 albeit the current owner also has a non matching Hawksworth 4000g new built tank & currently the loco is being offered for sale.

Thanks for clearing that up. By coincidence I have been trying to work out which of these tenders was which in the last couple of weeks so this thread has been pretty handy.

Are you sure about the GER one being at Mizens? There is an original LNER Group Standard 4200 gallon tender there but I thought the GER frame was owned by the other B17 group and was stored on the Mid Norfolk along with tender 7163 that you mentioned already.

No I think I've confused myself along the way - I can't find the page I was viewing last evening where I thought one B17 was using Holden, the other Standard 4200 LNER?? I think I'm wrong!

Edit - I confused the Holden chassis at Mid Norfolk Railway which is allocated to B17 build along with 4200 Standard tender at same location. Woking B17 tender is another 4200 LNER Standard so three source tenders for two B17s ! :)

The Furness Railway Trust, the tender tank is now at the Ribble Steam railways an they are a fair bit on with restoring it. Some pictures (interspersed with many of FR20) can be found on their weekly blog here http://www.furnessrailwaytrust.org.uk/about/blog/

FWIW the Fowler 3500g. tender currently with 42765 came from the Carlisle? breakdown train via Steamport. When it was there, still in B.R. lined black, the number 42756 was visible stencilled on the frames.

(From 1472's post on page 1)

I have just looked at the B&R video '3802 Restored' and this confirms that the tender came from Swindon in 1985 where it had been used as an oil carrier. The image on the DVD isn't particularly clear but the tender does seem to carry the number '2' in the centre of the BR emblem.

So to recap the three Collett 4000 gallon tenders at Swindon in the early 1980's were sold as follows:

Un numbered tender purchased by Earlestoke Manor Fund and currently numbered 2792 though its correct number is 2745

Tender number 1 purchased by the Earlestoke Manor Fund and subsequently sold to the owner of Castle class no. 7027. The chassis remains with 7027 but the tank has now been resold to Furness Railway Trust for use on the tender chassis they have for Hall class no. 4979.

Tender number 2 purchased by the owners of 2885 class 2-8-0 no. 3802 and currently with this loco. This tender has been identified as no.2583

Yes to 3802, but not 3862. See my post above.

I believe that the 567 "New Build" has an original GCR/MSL tender in poor condition?
