It should be pointed out that the run took place with Roller Bearing equipped Rolling stock, and one of the big hurdles to overcome in operation was treating the rolling stock with sufficient respect until everything truly warmed up.

When asked about "how much", they could hang off the drawbar of 4014, Ed Dickens looked over at a freight yard in Sacremento, and said, all of that!!!

 

Altitude has very little effect on the power output of a steam locomotive except in poorly designed boilers the mass of air available for combustion could be reduced enough to limit steam production and superheat temperature.

 

But on the other hand, reduced atmospheric pressure will mean a lower boiling point for water (93 degrees at 6,000 feet). Whether that would completely counter balance the above point I have no idea but in theory it should help.

 

No it won’t, because the boiler pressure controls the temperature of the water in the boiler.

Now safely locked up for 2019, a year that saw the unthinkable happen, and a big boy steam again.

 

Just like a closed lorry carrying live chickens weighs the same even if they're all having a flutter at the same time!

I do recall some Andean railways needing to upgrade from their first diesels, which were pretty much HP for HP equivalents of the steam locos the were intended to replace. The thin atmosphere at high altitudes has a marked negative effect on the power output of normally aspirated IC engines .... witness all piston engined aircraft have much lower 'ceilings' than jet planes (or rocket powered craft for, that matter).

 

BTW mileage for its first year is calculated to be just short of 11,000, for her 2 circular trips.

No UP steam in 2020.

 

Entirely predictable, but now gives time to save, and have "that" holiday next year, once the program comes out.

It has been mentioned using UP4014, on a couple of freight turns, to publicise the work done by UP in these difficult times.

That would be worth watching!!!
