The answer to your last point is quite noticeable when looked at side on. Preservation is a matter of personal opinion, any Jubilee painted in BR black is a representation of a style carried by that particular class. A good example is 60103, as LNER 4472 with single chimney it represented a typical A3 in 1930s condition. As an individual loco it didn’t become an A3 until 1947 when it was No 103 and didn’t get left hand drive until 1954. Galatea in fire engine red represented nothing

    Where there`s a will there`s a way

    Where there`s a (steam) locomotive there`s a livery debate

Is this just a British obsession, or do Norwegian enthusiasts also argue over what colour to paint things?

Good question bluetrain. :) I`m not (active) into the railway preservation in my own country, so I can`t tell.
It`s mainly British locomotives that makes my eyes glittering:Happy:

Black, sometimes with red footplate edges, or green if they're really old seems to be the Norwegian way!

Thankfully the NSB locos only really had two choices!! A multi-shade blue version (early) and black later on. On black locos the embellishments (red rod flutings or blue flutings etc) were done by individual works.

Now trying to work out what all the exact shades for the blue livery were is proving difficult...

You're right-the Mk11's don't look right in blood and custard, but would the blue and grey look better behind a BR Black locomotive? Are there really not enough Mk1's around passed for main line work....

Mark 2s,to me, look wrong in anything other than blue/grey and they did get steam hauled, in this livery, in the last two years or so of steam.

I seem to remember one or two MkIIs in SR green, c1967, but my memory may be playing games.

I never saw one in maroon, nor do I recall any photos. Here's one in Green (apologies to uncredited photographer and publisher) ....

Yes, a few were both maroon and green for a short time, I have seen some footage of a train on Shap with a maroon mark 2 in the formation, a period 3 LMS coach was also in the train. I think green suited them slightly better, personally.

We had green Mk2's on the MHR, but not hauled by 41312, which of course is now an MHRPS loco

PS what about 34105 in blue????
