To be fair I think it's the heating and shunting combination that leads to a diesel. That was the case on this trip. For places like Lincoln it's not necessary and as long as the train heating is up to it (and that's a FTR matter worth it's own thread!) the DL is not used.

I have to take you to task over that comment, firstly, without ever being on the footplate you appear to be questioning the ability of the crew in circumstances you cannot know anything about, and secondly, the man on the back does not decide to give help unless it is agreed with the driver/TI at the front.

I think you were very lucky to have the right crews and I missed a very good day out with steam

Might produce lots of steam for heat, but also uses a decent amount of water.

Stretching the water stops is something Tornado is very good at, hence the better paths.

Not the crew's ability at all. You have actually raised that red herring of an issue. I am talking about inconsistency that has little to do with your out of sync remark.

The point about extra water needed for steam heat was raised by one of the drivers. And I also gather 'from the horse's mouth' that Tornado was very economical with water yesterday.

Correct. There should be guidelines which are adhered to by all crews. Incidentally if this was a WCR job how was Jim Clarke involved? He is a Hither Green DBC driver.

I did hear at the Peterborough water stop about Tornado needing only another 1000 gallons not too long into the stop. Another highlight at Peterborough was seeing the Nene Valley Train of Lights in the platform of their station as we left towards Kings Cross.

As for steam heat in Coach H it was certainly working (a bit too well) on the up run.

Surely ETH if there was a diesel in the consist, and that is often too efficient. Not helped by only being on or off.

I am sure someone can easily do the calculation, but if the operator insists on the item, and in this case, being on the ECML, in a busy period, it is to be accepted.

Yes, other operators of Tornado, may go without, but run the risk of a poor performance for the passengers, due to problems with heat.

They would also have access to Thunderbird loco's, at hand in the chance of a sit down, that should also be factored in.

Think we have been here before, damned if you do, have a problem, damned if you don't...
