Standard DMU's (with a Blue square code) have an electro-pneumatic control system, the air being used to change gear and direction.

    license is granted.

I do hope this is so. I do wish someone at SR would update the Wareham Project update page on the SR website, it's nearly 5 months old and mostly out of date.

The 121 has been back for a few weeks now and has been undertaking driver training runs.

Do you mean the 117 returning January?
I see on the SR website Project Wareham update page
If delayed till May will miss the Diesel gala, but if due to safety mainline safeguards understandable.

Hopefully when the timetable is published will have some provision for the steam loco 31806 to make some Swanage to Wareham passenger journeys as well as the DMUs?

Its funny that the 117's are the railways choice of motive power for the Wareham services because of multiple engines, allowing for redundancy, yet a single engine is sent to pick them up!

The real advantage of 117s (and indeed the 121 bubble car) is that they are constructed differently to mark 1s (and indeed the old SR EMUs) and aren't covered by the same regulation.

Is there any West Coast Driver that would have traction knowledge of DMMU's? I very much doubt it!
Also I think you will find that the class 117 is not passed for working under it's own power over NR Metals yet.

I would suspect that it has been so long since a class 117 vehicle ventured onto the mainline that any gauging certification has expired. In that case they will need to be laser scanned and go through the whole gauge clearance process as if they were new vehicles.
This isn't anything new - 850 Lord Nelson had to be gauged from first principles at the end of its overhaul in 2006, even though it had previously run on the main line in preservation.

    Cheers, Neil
