Why did Clan Line have a 47 tagged on the back a few weeks ago ? was it because the people who were planning the jobs thought it was needed, or was it just the give the 47 a run out and the driver a bit of overtime?

You really do seem to 'have a problem with all things WCRC Al.

This particular job is virtually impossible to do without taking a diesel along with you. It is necessary for the shunt and train turning move at the Edinburgh end and congestion there is such that there is little scope to attach/detach a loco at Waverley itself. Then there are also the obvious advantages of being able to heat the train efficiently (useful on the shortest day of the year) and of course assisting out of loops or station stops where adhesion may be difficult if a speedy exit is required. I doubt it spoiled many peoples enjoyment on the train and the A1 still sounded superb as it lifted the train away from Durham on the return regardless of what the diesel may or may not have been doing on the back.

Here's to more of the same next year.

    Happy Christmas to all

Clan Line has a 67 on the back normally just for banking out of Victoria but it stays attached during the leaf fall season as a precaution. I don’t think it has ever been needed and certainly wasn’t when I was on the train a few weeks ago. The danger point is Gomshall bank from a standing start from the water stop at Shalford. The only other times you may see it is during the train heat season if the generator coach is playing up.
Running steam on the mainline is a privilege and it’s best to play safe and keep a good relationship with NR and the TOCs
Diesels on the back are an extra expense so I’m sure no one does it when they don’t need to.

Considering the 200+ miles both ways to Edinburgh it was understandable having a diesel tailgunner for insurance seen as though there are no diesel depots after Heaton until Edinburgh or vice versa.

More significant is the fact that since it was WCR operated, they would be unlikely to get assistance from those depots.

On the way back through Newcastle Central, there was a class 67 parked up whether it was on standby for us on the Edinburgh Xmas market or for another reason I'm not sure why.

There's usually a 67 parked up there as a Thunderbird I believe. This one was there in August 2017 when I spent some time with my camera at Newcastle while my car was in for service. 67028-(1)-800webc.jpg

There is a contract with the ECML franchise for Class 67s for Thunderbird duty; IIRC they are located at Kings Cross,Peterborough, Doncaster, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

How nice of you to stick your oar in at this festive time of year. The problem you may have is distinguishing one set of circumstances from another. So can I try to explain it all once again for you ?

I was merely observing that the same loco with the same load found itself helped (a bit, we are told) in one set of circumstances and not the other. I assume, but don't know, of course, that the tailgunner was needed on the Edinburgh trip for similar reasons to the York trip - something about which I have absolutely no problem at all. But the outcomes were different. These variations are clearly down to what the crews on the day saw as appropriate but it's hard to ignore the lottery of it all. And for a minority that matters.

And just for the record I don't 'have a problem' with West Coast. They are remarkable at many levels and do things with steam that no other company can do or will attempt to do. Why on earth should I have a problem with that given my interests? But neither do I carry a flag for them.

As for Clan Line, the difference was that everyone knew what was going to happen on the trip you mention as it was set up like that from the planning of the trip. In other words the arrangements were about as transparent as at times the West Coast arrangements can be opaque. And in the latter case that is often not helped by the companies they work with being a bit coy over arrangements...or they simply don't know as I have also been told more times than I care to count.

But we have a new year coming and you can only hope that the customer will be able to choose in an informed manner. The market will prevail and so will my decisions about spending the next few thousands pounds.

As I said before since it was a WCR operated train it is highly unlikely that a DB loco would be available as stand by.

Indeed, as I said. And as I also said this kind of lottery for what on the face of it seem to be identical trips is no way to spend money. I was lucky on the York trip but it would be good if 2020 saw an improvement in the information available.

Correct Answer, to all the conundrums the trip presented, completely acceptable in my view.

And if the timetable has been tweaked in light of new timetable, and a shove is required to get moving, people have to accept it.

or the tour takes even longer to get to destination, or does not run at all......

Perhaps the 47 was there for operational reasons.
WCRC do know what they are doing.
If you can do better run the tour yourself.
