What are you using on the insides to treat the bare wood? Last time we did an open wagon we just painted the lot to be sure as we didn't want it to rot from the inside.

Same mix as the flooring - 50/50 creocote and waste oil. Most of the inside panelling isn't new, so it's just renewal of the treatment, but the new floor planking has had several soakings with it (we stood the ends in the bucket for some time!).

Just a quickie today - thanks to Tim, Phil & Colin the cable drum which was in storage (in bits) in our grounded van has been reassembled in the Southern open wagon. The intention is to clad it so it appears to be a full drum, paint it and rope it down in the wagon so that it's not just an empty wagon running up and down in the freight rake...

Another quick update - Tim added some skirting to the Civils Brake Van and Phil managed to paint the cable drum in the Southern Open. The eagle eyed amongst you may spot the tweak to the drum - if I remember correctly, this was actually done to fit either the transport or a doorway when the drum was originally obtained, but it now makes it slightly easier to keep it stable in the wagon (although it will of course be fully roped down too!). Re-roofing the brake van is scheduled for a couple of weeks time if all goes to plan...

    Every little helps....

Tim has undertaken another commission to produce replica D-plates for some privately owned rolling stock, and on the back of that further enquiries have been received. If you would like to have replica plates made for your own rolling stock, Tim is happy to provide a quote :)

Tim then managed to squeeze in a quick bit of signwriting on the Banana Van which will be the group's display/sales stand. This is part of trying to tie up various loose ends before embarking on the next round of van refurbishment(s). We will also have a working party at Wansford this coming Sunday to replace the roof on the civils brake van as that is the last remaining major piece of work to be done before we can paint it and hand it back.

Yesterday saw a significant step towards completion of the civil engineering brake van when Tim, Neil, Steve, Stu & Josh successfully repaired the roof planking, fitted new ply roof boards and bonded the canvas to them. It's a messy job, and all done at an inconvenient height, but once the canvas bonding has set we can proceed with fitting the side batons, painting the roof (several layers), refit the duckets, and then paint the rest of the van. Ensuring that the canvas was as smooth as possible involved the amusing sight of Tim 'swimming' up and down the roof using a piece of scaffolding pole as a pseudo rolling pin. Tim also quickly fitted the D-plates to the SR open at the end of the day.

I won't bother with FB link as it's identical to the above (because I did the FB update too!).

Too many photos for a single message, so in this one: roof planking section for repair, repaired planking, group shot, ply being screwed down, some mucking about, ply all in place and finally Tim sanding off the slight overlap ready for the canvas.

Photos from afternoon when we applied the bonding and fitted the roof canvas:

Group bonding session, Tim & Steve placing canvas on bonding, other half bonding, initial smoothing, Tim swimming on roof with rolling pin, finished article (very convenient class 14 to stand on for this shot!), end of the day and finally the D-plate on SR 5869

For those who are interested, NVR station Orton Mere can be seen masquerading as Walford Common in this week's episodes of EastEnders.

What's that got to do with wagons I hear you ask....well, EastEnders have filmed at NVR before and on one occasion it involved a freight train. Over the past month or so I've been digging in to the history of filming at NVR which used wagons, and so have produced a blog entry on the Wagon Group website all about it, and with the appearance of NVR on EastEnders this week it seems as good a time as any to publish it :)

"There was a good bit of Wagon Work going on yesterday with further work on the roof of the Civils Brake Van.

The cable drum in the Southern Open has also been clad and just requires lettering before the Southern can have a fitness to run exam and fingers crossed be back in traffic."

Another brief update on work undertaken last week:

"More Brake Van work has seen the roof furniture completed and the roof painted by Philip Halstead, Neil Shepherd, Colin Dewey, and new member Clifford Smith, whilst Alastair Hobbs has continued body work.

Meanwhile, Timothy Hobman has been busy with finishing the lettering of the Banana Van....very smart!"

Nearly there now - Tim's report on yesterday's session on the wagons: https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1166321363557836

And for those who don't do FB:

"Some great wagon work yesterday to try and finish off the Southern and Shock Opens....
Tim lettered up the cable drum whilst Phil and Colin opened up the axle boxes for inspection. The axle boxes were then checked, cleaned, and topped up with oil.
By close of play both opens were oiled up and the Southern had the cable drum lashed down.
We also managed a better picture of the completed Brake Van roof and lettering on the Shock Open....just a bit of lettering to finish and the Shock stripes next session, then these wagons are done."

[Edited to add the brakevan roof photo]

Two down, loads more to go.

Friday saw the two open wagons return to traffic! Here is Tim's update from FB: https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1179297975593508

"It's all change in the Wagon Group....
After a big shunt last Friday Southern Open S5869 and BR SHOCK open B721890 were passed fit for traffic and returned to Peterborough into the Freight Train.
At the same time LNWR Open, LMS Brake and three BR Vans were brought into the Yard at Wansford and into the restoration queue.
BR PALVAN B778810 was then brought into the shed for restoration."

We've also added a blog entry to the Wagon Group website covering the history of these two open wagons: https://nvrwagons.wordpress.com/2019/12/04/a-tale-of-two-wagons/

Finally, places are selling quickly on the freight driving experience in the new year - the afternoon is sold out, but still places in the morning - don't miss out! https://nvr.org.uk/product.php/137/winter-goods-driving-experience

In preparation for our Winter Goods Driving Course this Friday, Colin, Phil and Tim have been at Peterborough oiling up the rake.

The cable drum has had a cradle fitted and the Wagon Sheet has been fitted to the Shock Open.

We're all looking forward to a good day Friday.

I'm told she will be facing East (i.e. towards P'boro).
