04/02/2020 - Gresley A4 - 60009 "Union of South Africa" having a blow on the chime as it rounds the curve into Wennington on 5M50 - loaded test run around the Carnforth -Hellifield - Blackburn circuit.

Through and through but the Stanier whistle was never the best to be honest as with the locos being that loud you rarely heard the the whistle anyway

 

A minute earlier and I would have seen UoSA on Wilpshire bank LIVE, but when I saw you on the bridge I knew that there would be a vid - thanks.

 

Does anyone know if there’s another test run for 45231/LSL planned for tomorrow please?

I’ve seen all your shots in the sun today and fancy adding some inevitably cloudy shots into the thread...

LNER A4 60009 to Castleton Cancelled

 

This is due to there being no need according to the support crew, it was only in place if she needed to go back for repairs after the run.

 

There was very little sun around yesterday in Shropshire - a drive up north may have been a better decision !

The 5P45 and 5P55 paths for Coton Hill on Monday and Tuesday were amended to VAR in RTT and there's no change for today so I assume nothing running.
However looking at next week on Wednesday 12th the paths are again VAR but then the l/e paths to Chester are marked STP, probably a day to watch.

Oh good, I might now get chance to see 60009 running Light Engine across to York prior to taking the RTC Valentines White Rose on Feb 15th.

Twilight of No 9 at Bury 2 February 2020

The end is approaching of over forty years main line running by John Cameron’s Gresley A4 Pacific No 60009 Union of South Africa. It has been receiving attention by Rileys at Bury ahead of its last few main line runs before its ticket finally runs out in April.

Richard Newton of 3P20 Parcels Group arranged a night shoot just before N0 9 departed, and a gathering of hardy souls braved the wind and heavy showers to have a long last look. By happy coincidence the clouds parted to enable a heavenly body and an earthly masterpiece to be brought together in my favourite picture of this collection.
