The NYMR currently owns 926, 3672, 45428, 75029, 76079 & 80135. Of those, 926, 3672, 75029 and 80135 have been gifted to them, either in wills or by generous benefactors. It has only purchased two locos. It did own 44806 but has recently sold this, although it will remain on the Railway. All the other locos are privately owned by groups or individuals.
There are many heritage railways that don't own locos and rely on hired in ones to run their services. The important thing is to have long term stability.

    Hi Keith,

To expand on @michaelh 's point the SVR locomotives and their owners are at https://www.svrwiki.com/Steam_Locomotives.

4930 was bought by SVR(H) in June 1972.
45110 too was an early (1970s?) purchase.
600 was donated to the SVR in 2008, following a loan since 1971.
The SVR Charitable Trust owns 7819 and that was transferred from the loco Fund in 2004.

So 3/4, all out of traffic, out of the 28 or so based on the SVR - the SVR relies on locos owned by preservation groups based on the SVR.

For the record, the SVR sold 193 in 1983, 46443 in 1984 and 45690 Leander and 45699 Galatea in 1994.

    Regards

    Patrick

45110 was originally owned by David Porter, who then sold it to the SVR in 1974.

I never meant imply the engine belonged to WSR or indeed they'd be gifted it, I was merely referring to it in that way as originally the previous owner of Thornbury was gonna have it restored for usage on the WSR as well as elsewhere, and seeing as he had also become a key figurehead in the new management for the WSR it seemed a safe bet it was for all intents and purposes an engine to call their own as I put it. Apologies if I didn't explain that part properly.

I didn’t realise David Shepherd gifted 75029 to the NYMR. I thought it was sold to fund the overhaul of 92203?

He didn't gift it to the NYMR. I think you will find that he sold it to a third party who in turn gifted it to the railway.

How many of those are currently serviceable or likely to be within say 2 years?

41312 is currently serviceable and 34007 was bought in ticket. The MHR are planning for their future by aquiring locomotives to make up their own fleet so that they do not have to solely rely on locomotives owned by external owners/loco groups. The MHR have lost 60019, 31625, 31806, 31874, 34016, 34067, 90775, 3278 and 35018 over the years. Luckily they were able to buy 73096 back after she was taken away by the previous owner.
The recent strategy document outlines the locomotive plans over the next few years:
    "LocomotiveOverhauls
In order to sustainably meet these requirements, we are aspiring to have no more than two overhauls requiring significant input from Staff and Volunteers occurring simultaneously and will prioritise locomotives owned by the MHR/MHRPS.
    We are aiming to:
    - complete 30506 as soon as possible
    •Complete 35005 & 34105 by mid-2021 or sooner
    •Overhaul 850 once 30506 is complete
    •Prioritise 75079 and 73096 for completion after 35005 and 34105
    •30499 & 30828 to join when ready
•34007 will be conserved in the short term with a view to exploring potential overhaul and operation options by a 3rd party, otherwise 34007 along with 45379 will be built into the plan after 73096 is in service
•Conserve 80150 & 34058. It is recognised that with the complexity of overhauling and restoring steam locomotives this approach will need to be flexible."

I'm not an MHR member so don't take my word on it, but I believe that 41312 is currently the only one of those listed locos (35005, 34007, 34058, 41312, 45379, 73096, 75079 & 80150) that's currently in service, but as far as I know the MHR also own an operational "Thomas". Can Pac would seem to be the closest of the remainder of those to steaming again.

Although owned by other parties, 506, 30925 and 76017 are also currently operational, with others under overhaul.

On another note, the MHR is probably the only railway I've seen with a Wikipedia page dedicated to it's former residents

The split of the MHR pages between current and former residents is perfectly logical, especially given the numbers involved. The SVR has at least as many former residents as the MHR, although I notice not all of them are listed on Wikipedia. I do update Wikipedia from time to time so if I get the urge at some point, I'll add all the missing ones (3020, MR 1000, Peckett 1738, Kitson 5474 and so on) and create a separate page like the MHR. Until then, you may well be right!

Back to Thornbury, as the saying goes...

Don't forget the Gresley D49 Hunt, or the GNR(I) V compound... of the Edwardian-type inside-cylinder 4-4-0s, some of the most conspicuous successes came out of Ashford in the immediate post-WW1 era... LSWR D15 was pretty damn good too.

Closer, but still not right! David Shepherd sold it to the East Somerset Railway who later sold it to Peter Best after its boiler was damaged by a crane jib collapsing on it. Peter Best in turn offered it for sale after overhauling it and running it for a while on the NYMR. I believe that Ian Riley was among those interested but in the end it was bought by another NYMR supporter who then donated a half share to the NYMR (he also bought 44806 later on and donated a half share in that - I don't know whether he has sold his half share in that to Peter Best as well. Keeping a half share was his way of ensuring the the loco did not stay out of traffic for long spells).
