I should be around all day - do say hello - I'll probably be riding in the brake vans, most likely in overalls, large bloke, not much hair, beard :)

My mate is doing the footplate experience and I'm going near to the lineside and might have a ride on the brake van later on?

Well, what a way to kick off the New Year. The freight rake back up to full strength and being hauled by Ian Riley's LMS Black 5 44871 on the Freight Driving Experience Course. Both loco and support crew (who made up 2/3 of the footplate crew yesterday) are a credit to Mr Riley's outfit. All the participants (and their +1s) appeared to have a very enjoyable day, and the Wagon Group volunteers who were there even got a brief turn on the regulator :) And, of course, we raised some funds towards restoring more wagons.

Photos below all courtesy of my fellow NVR volunteer Martin Vos - I think you'll agree they could easily pass for a 1950s mixed freight. Roll on the next one, but in the mean time we'll be knuckling down to work on the wagons - the PalVan is already being prepared for repaint, all though this has shown some areas requiring a little TLC to the woodwork.

[Edit - I forgot to say thank you to Andrew for the video footage above. I'm in there if you know what you're looking for...]

A good day today with lots of progress on the brake van. Having fortified themselves with breakfast in the railway cafe, Tim & Steve spent the morning panelling the side of the civil engineering brake van and had completed this by the time Stu & Josh arrived at lunchtime. After lunch the tasks were divided up. Tim cut out rotten wood from the bottom of a corner post and then cut a replacement section to size and shape. Lack of a hammer caused some improvisation during the chiselling and fitting operations. Steve attacked the handrails with the big socket set (they need to come off as someone in the past has fitted them upside down!). Steve then attacked them with the angle grinder when they proved resistant to the sockets. Stu & Josh set about filling all the screws and gaps now that the panelling is essentially complete, and by the end of the day all of the balcony and side panelling had been filled. Steve then made a start on sanding the filler where it had set. Tim decided to trim the bottoms of the side panelling, although the lack of a suitable powered saw led to some improvisation with the angle grinder and a cutting disc. It was a smokin' solution :) By the end of the day the brake van looked in good shape, ready for a bit more filler, fitting the duckets and then painting.

Although we only have one of the two Panniers we were hoping to have for the Swindon 70 weekend, the freight driving experience on Friday 6th March will be Pannier powered in the guise of 6779 (last Pannier Class to be built and leave Swindon works).

Afternoon sold out, but there are a few places still on the morning session.

£120 for bacon bap & drink, two round trips with the loose coupled freight, a turn on the footplate driving and firing on each trip, riding in the brake vans when not on the footplate.

Thanks for the great photos of Friday's Freight Driving Experience - it was another fantastic day when the weather smiled on us and all sixteen participants (and guests too) enjoyed a great day, not only driving and firing, but also chatting with us and each other while riding the brake vans. Yet another sold out course - who says freight doesn't pay!

We ran with a slightly reduced freight rake of four vans and four opens plus the two brake vans due to operational constraints - the rake needed to be stabled overnight at Wansford for use during the Swindon 70 event on Saturday and Sunday, and with limited siding space available, Tim & Stu actually had to measure the rake to make sure it would fit!

This update is brought to you from my self-isolation bunker, although others have managed to get to the railway and work on the wagons...

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1268020860054552

"In an effort to carry on regardless the Wagon Group have got some stuff achieved today.

Tim has ticked off another overdue job and has given the grounded Western Van body by the entrance gate its identity back, complete with the appropriate 'RETURN EMPTY TO FISHGUARD W.R.' markings.

Meanwhile in the shed, Phil and Colin have continued work on Palvan B778810."

Well it looks like this will be the last activity report for a while - Tim and Steve just squeezed in a final session on the brake van panelling before the lock down...

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1272804879576150

    "ALL TRAFFIC HALTED!!!

Just prior to lockdown Tim and Steve put in a mammoth session on the Civils Brake Van B954024. Tim was social distancing by hiding in the shed profiling cladding, whilst Steve was filling and sanding. One end is all but complete, with cladding, skirting, and a new door threshold.

There is still a few bits to do, but we are now close to being able to paint. By close of play both our current projects, Brake Van B954024 and Palvan B778810 are seen slumbering in the shed until we can get back to it.

Thank you to all our supporters during this difficult time for all."

Well, I was wrong. Tim has been busy while under lockdown and has painted our collection of wagon plates ready to go in our exhibition wagon (the Banana Van). These will be accompanied by some text about each works and some pictures......There will be some BR plates to join these in due course.

More news will follow on the Wagon Group Exhibition/Museum Space as more exhibits are worked on.

And a smaller scale update today - Tim is keeping himself busy during the lockdown! And it is a wagon which should see use at the railway once the new miniature railway is constructed at Wansford (work is ongoing during lockdown preparing other rolling stock and re-sleepering track panels ready for laying when we can get back onsite).

    WMR Website: https://nvr.org.uk/article.php/119/wansford-miniature-railway
    WMR Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wansfordminaturerailway/

    From FB:

"Keeping the wagon dream alive, and with no end to his talents, Tim has taken on a private commission for a member of the NVR Miniature Railway Group.

The wagon has been completely repainted and hand painted by Tim....not a single transfer in sight!

A time consuming job, but well worth it!"

NVR has sanctioned the return of volunteers under strict risk assessment and social distancing measures, and today saw four of the wagon team back in action at Wansford...

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1325532270970077

    "WE'RE BACK!
With the appropriate risk assessments and social distancing four members of the Wagon Group got back to work today.
Tim completed the cladding on BR Brake Van B954024 whilst Steve sealed some joints.
Clifford continued sanding Palvan B778810 in preparation for painting whilst Phil began painting the chassis. An assessment was made of the roof, but was found to need replacing and so was stripped by Steve.
A good days work and good to be back."

Steve sealing joints; Tim angle grinding some wood!; Filler applied to end panelling; Clifford sanding PalVan; Phil painting PalVan; Buffer requiring attention; PalVan roof assessment - fail!; PalVan roof stripped
